The Open University teaches through methods of distance learning, called ‘supported open learning’, which is flexible – students work where and when they choose to fit in with jobs, families and other commitments. Most of their undergraduate courses have no formal entry requirements.
The Student Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS) is here to help higher education students find the right information, support and funding. They assess applications for living costs and bursaries for eligible students studying in the UK.
The Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) supports young people in making post-16 choices, as well as those applying for undergraduate and postgraduate courses. UCAS is an independent charity providing information, advice and admissions services to inspire and facilitate educational progression.
Finding the right course for the career that you want can be a bit daunting at first with the large variety of courses and study options available within the country. This decision, however, has been made a lot easier by the the UniGuide website. The UniGuide website also provides information on possible career paths after finishing the course, what to expect while studying and advice from students who have been through the course already.
MY WORLD OF WORK
My World of Work is delivered by Skills Development Scotland, the national skills body which supports the people and businesses of Scotland. They offer the help you need to get the career that you want. At school and right through to retirement, My World of Work helps you with up-to-date information, advice and tools when you need it most:
● Subject choices – understand your strengths and make better choices about your subject choices and future career
● Leaving school – find a career that interests you and understand the skills you need to get the job you want
● Preparing for a job – discover Scotland’s industries, search for jobs, build your CV and practice for interviews
● Modern Apprenticeships – why not earn as you learn? Find out what apprenticeships are available and how they work
SKILLS DEVELOPMENT SCOTLAND
Skills Development Scotland has qualified careers advisors working in every state secondary school in Scotland. We work with students in group discussions, drop-in clinics and one-to-one interviews to develop their Career Management Skills.
Our comprehensive service includes:
-Intensive one-to-one career coaching -group sessions on an annual basis
-drop-in clinics -availability at school events like parents’ evenings
We’re here to help you too. You can:
-talk to your young person’s school Careers Advisor at parents nights or school events
-join the one-to-one interview at subject choice staage with your young person and their careers advisor
-use the parents and carers section of My World of Work which has specific information to help you at myworldofwork.co.uk/parents
