Struggling readers:

Learning to read is a challenge for many students, but most can become good readers if they get the right help. Farrell et al.(2019) in their research, discussed three general types of difficulties in reading:

1- Poor at Language Comprehension (LC)

2- Poor at Decoding (D)

3- Weakness in both areas

Teachers are responsible to provide professional support to improve students reading skills, particularly when a student struggle with reading. They need to practice being more meaning focus rather than the skilled focus. Knapp, M.S. (1995) argues that when lessons are meaning-focused, struggling readers perform better than when lessons are skills-focused. According to them, the following activities can improve struggling learners’ reading abilities.

    • Teachers and struggling students need to read more

    • Prepare texts that are according to their reading levels

    • Provide libraries and eliminate workbooks

    • Eliminate test preparation

    • Eliminate paraprofessionals from instructional roles

    • Dedicating more time to class

    • Implementing small group instruction

    • Implementing the rope model of the reading
