Struggling readers:
Learning to read is a challenge for many students, but most can become good readers if they get the right help. Farrell et al.(2019) in their research, discussed three general types of difficulties in reading:
1- Poor at Language Comprehension (LC)
2- Poor at Decoding (D)
3- Weakness in both areas
Teachers are responsible to provide professional support to improve students reading skills, particularly when a student struggle with reading. They need to practice being more meaning focus rather than the skilled focus. Knapp, M.S. (1995) argues that when lessons are meaning-focused, struggling readers perform better than when lessons are skills-focused. According to them, the following activities can improve struggling learners’ reading abilities.
Teachers and struggling students need to read more
Prepare texts that are according to their reading levels
Provide libraries and eliminate workbooks
Eliminate test preparation
Eliminate paraprofessionals from instructional roles
Dedicating more time to class
Implementing small group instruction
Implementing the rope model of the reading
