School leadership

As it is discussed that literacy is not just the ability of reading and writing whereas other skills like social behavior and attitude, building effective communication, decision making etc. is also crucial to be incorporated in schools’ activities. Having the leadership skills and putting them into practice is the main part of teachers’ responsibilities. According to Tajik and Wali (2020) in their research “Principals’ strategies for increasing students’ participation in school leadership in a rural, mountainous region in Pakistan”, stated that there is a significant difference between management and leadership concepts.

Leadership: is about providing vision and directing people toward a common purpose

Management: management concentrate on the implementation of the specific tasks

For instance; an instructor needs to manage how to complete the class curriculum in a specific period, at the same time s/he is responsible to lead the class and encouraging students to take action toward the same objective.

Following tips provide a brief guideline to teachers on how to effectively lead a classroom, inspire students to take part in school activities, and enhance their leadership skills.

  • Being knowledgeable of leadership concepts:

It is required for instructors to have enough skills and knowledge of leadership and be situational leaders in diverse circumstances.

  • Considering students as future leaders:

Recognition and rewards, committee membership, class monitors, Chief perfects, guest speakers, and monthly consultations with students and teachers are the strategies to promote students’ engagement in school activities where they can practice leadership skills

  • Being adhered to the participatory and total leadership theories:

Total leadership refers to when the activities are widely distributed among and engaged many people, including students. When an instructor gives equal opportunities to all learners to present their strengths and participate in the school’s extracurricular activities based on their interests and strengths, actually the teacher is implementing the total leadership practices. The influential thing in this type of widely engaged leadership is that when the power and influence of students and parents amplify, the influence and power of teachers and principals do not diminish, rather their popularity and impressions also boost.

These three components are highlighted as important points of delivering quality education. These can help school teachers, particularly novice teachers, to be successful in their profession and be servant leaders in the school community.
