Benchmark, SAE rule, Material selection and design specification
We intend to design the structure to meet the following requirements.
Easy to maintain
manufactured and modify very cheaper
safe to repair
light weight
low in cost
We selected the space frame since it met the 1 - 3 requirement and it able to be manufactured in small workshop.
However, Space frame that we design must follow to Team Benchmark and SAE rule.
light weight and low in cost topic we met that requirement by selected material. So, we make selection table to weighting material between strength and cost from each material property.
The low carbon steel was heavy but strong, with a potential ‘infinite’ fatigue life, easy to weld and needing no special heat treatments. It is very agreeable to ‘Owner modifications’.
Low carbon steel is inexpensive and readily available ‘off the shelf’ in a large range of sizes – though some of the less popular sizes are only available on ‘special order’. design team choose AISI1020 25.4 mm x 2 mm because this is alway already in stock.
Though prone to rust, low carbon steel is easily painted, and with the correct coating choice, is easily and successfully repaired.
