The ADDIE Model is an Instructional Systems Development model that provides a systematic approach to analyzing, designing, developing, implementing, and evaluating learning and development (L&D) interventions; it is also referred to as the L&D Management Cycle.
This model consists of the following phases:
The Analysis phase in the L&D Management Cycle that involves determining competency development needs to improve individual and organizational performance; provides basis for identifying appropriate learning interventions to address those needs; also referred to as learning needs analysis (LNA).
The Deisgn Phase in the L&D Management Cycle that involves conceptualizing and mapping out the elements of the specific L&D intervention that is intended to address a set of competency gaps.
The Development Phase in the L&D Management Cycle that involves identifying, conceptualizing, designing, producing, and assessing resource materials that will support delivery and learning acquisition and evaluation during (and even after) the conduct of the intervention.
The Implementation Phase in the L&D Management Cycle that involves the conduct and management of planned L&D activities.
The Evaluation Phase in the L&D Management Cycle that involves determining whether objectives of the L&D intervention have been achieved and how the intervention has contributed to improved individual and organizational performance; also referred to as Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E).
In conclusion, the ADDIE Model plays a vital role in the Learning and Development (L&D) Cycle by providing a systematic and organized approach to designing, developing, implementing, and evaluating learning interventions. Through its five phases—Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation—it ensures that training programs and learning materials are relevant, effective, learner-centered, and aligned with organizational goals.
The model also promotes continuous improvement by identifying learning needs, enhancing instructional quality, and measuring outcomes. As a result, the ADDIE Model serves as a reliable framework in creating meaningful and sustainable learning and development initiatives.
