Issachar (Hebrew: יִשָּׂשכָר, '"There is reward"') was, according to the Book of Genesis, the fifth of the six sons of Jacob and Leah (Jacob's ninth son) - There were born to Jacob by Leah six sons: Rûbîl (Reuben), which is interpreted 'Great is God' (now Jacob was eighty-four years old at that time); Simeon, which is interpreted 'the Obedient;' Levi, that is 'the Perfect;' Judah, that is 'Praise;' Issachar, that is 'Hope is near;' and Zebulun, that is 'Gift' or 'Dwelling-place.' Dinah was also the daughter of Leah, Gen. 34:1
"...the children of Issachar, which were men that had understanding of the times,
to know what Israel ought to do;" - 1 Chron 12:32 -
The Standard of Issachar depicted the sun, moon, and stars, because the descendants of Issachar traditionally had the task of determining the hebrew calendar which involved astronomical calculations. Issachar's descendants also included 200 members of the Sanhedrin and Baasha, who assassinated the king Nadab and then became King of Israel.
