A Japanese woman named Ito served as a model for some of the artwork. Her philosophy and the shape of her cheeks are excellent.
I’ve been focusing on this montage-style composition lately. It’s an attempt to incorporate elements found in manga panels and film (moving images) but absent from still images. Rather than experiencing time sequentially along a narrative thread, I was able to utilize the imagery evoked by montage—a technique that visual media has exploited to the fullest (a sequence of unrelated images evokes the sensation of fast-forwarding). And then there’s skepticism toward reviews, analyses, established conventions, stability, and the status quo. The arrangement of panels, which is independent of the top, bottom, left, and right, renders the overall orientation of the work meaningless as well. Rather than leaving it up to the viewer to decide what is “up,” I leave it up to the viewer to decide how to view it.
The starting point was the top-and-bottom composition found in space movies—even though they’re set in outer space. That’s surely for the sake of ease of viewing and clarity. I reject that clarity—the idea that something should be easily understood and make sense. From the very first act of hanging the work on the wall, the piece forces the viewer to make a choice. In other words, it compels intervention. And in this work, I’ve taken it a step further by breaking it down into pieces. There are no definitive answers—not only in terms of horizontal and vertical orientation, but also regarding the up-and-down orientation of the individual pieces. If you’d rather stop thinking about it, just imitate the image of the work I’ve posted.
