The DR (the East German Railway) still operated the S-Bahn in West Berlin. The construction of the Berlin Wall led to West Berlin calling for the unions and politicians to boycott the S-Bahn. Subsequently, passenger numbers fell and the DR had large deficits in the exploitation of the S-Bahn in West Berlin. After strikes for better working conditions and a pay raise; the DR services were reduced and station Gesundbrunnen Ringbahn was closed on 18 September 1980.
The connection between Gesundbrunnen and the former East German station Schönhauser Allee was restored on September 17, 2001. The section of the ring line between Gesundbrunnen and Wedding was reopened as the last section on June 15, 2002.
