The DR (the East German Railway) still operated the S-Bahn in West Berlin. The construction of the Berlin Wall led to West Berlin calling for the unions and politicians to boycott the S-Bahn. Subsequently, passenger numbers fell and the DR had large deficits in the exploitation of the S-Bahn in West Berlin. After strikes for better working conditions and a pay raise; the DR services were reduced and station Friedenau was closed on 18 September 1980. The Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) took over the West Berlin S-Bahn network on 9 January 1984. This station was reopenend on 1 February 1985.
