The National 5 Computing Science course encourages learners to become successful, responsible and creative in using technologies, and to develop a range of qualities including flexibility, perseverance, confidence, and enterprise. At this level, the course covers a common core of concepts which underpin the study of computing science and explores the role and impact of contemporary computing technologies. The course covers 4 key areas: software design and development which enables learners to develop their programming and computational-thinking skills; computer systems where learners develop an understanding of how data and instructions are stored in binary form and basic computer architecture; database design and development where learners develop knowledge, understanding and practical problem-solving skills in database design and development and web design and development where learners develop knowledge, understanding and practical problem-solving skills in web design and development. This course is designed for learners who are considering further study or a career in computing science and related disciplines
