History

History explores what life was like for people in the past.  The study of History investigates the actions, beliefs, attitudes, the events and significant developments which affected people in the past. History seeks to understand how key turning points in the past have contributed to our current culture and society, and so will give young people a better understanding of the world they live in today.  In this age of rapid change and development, the study of History offers a valuable opportunity to identify the potential impact that current events may actually have on our future lives, as Santayana succinctly argues: if we do not learn from the mistakes of the past we will be forever condemned to repeat them.

The study of History promotes an extensive range of evaluative and analytical skills. It will stimulate a young person’s imagination and strengthen their ability to empathise with other people. In addition to successful learners, the study of History will help young people to become effective contributors, confident individuals and responsible citizens ready to achieve success in their chosen career.
