What is in this course?

People and Society will allow you to develop a greater understanding of society and your place in it. It is an interdisciplinary course which will give you the opportunity to study topics and issues from across several Social Subjects. Pupils will be given a say in what they want to study. Some examples of topics that could be studied are: ·

  • Kirkcaldy – Past and Present

  • The Developed World & Developing World

  • Scotland’s History and Scotland’s Future

  • Rights in the past and rights today

  • War in the past and war today

  • Slavery in the past and slavery today

  • Early Explorers

  • Antarctica and Everest

  • Crime and Punishment

  • Scotland and USA

  • Famous Scots

  • Earth Forces

  • Oppression

  • Democracy

The People and Society course is made up of three units. Pupils will develop routine skills of using information to make decisions & comparing and contrasting. Pupils will also develop investigating skills. Teaching and learning strategies used include group work, use of ICT, debates, class discussion, games, video and potentially educational excursions.

How will I know I am progressing?

Pupils will generate evidence for the three units throughout the year. All assessed work will be completed under ‘open book’ conditions to make it accessible for pupils


What SQA Qualifications can this lead to?

The S3 course will allow pupils to gain a National 3 qualification. Upon successful completion of all 3 units pupil will then progress on to National 4 in S4.


Additional considerations.

Pupils will gain a variety of transferable skills (e.g. making decisions, comparing, contrasting and investigating) as well as enhancing their literacy and numeracy skills.
