Initially formed in 1947 and restructured in 1978, the unit is the air component for the Romanian Ministry of Internal Affairs (Ministerul Afacerilor Interne). Formerly known as the Special Aviation Unit (Unitatea Specialǎ de Aviaţie), their headquarters is at Aurel Vlaicu International Airport (Băneasa Airport). Missions include Search and Rescue, Humanitarian and community, road traffic observation and other special designated missions in cooperation with the Romanian Police, Border Police, Gendarmerie and Intelligence Services.
