The Hungarian Air Force is the aerial branch of the Hungarian Defence Forces
In 1918, following the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, a small air arm utilising surviving aircraft from Hungarian factories and training schools was established as the Hungarian Red Air Force but was shortly disbanded upon the downfall of the Hungarian Soviet Republic. In 1920 the Treaty of Trianon forbid Hungary to own military aircraft, however, a secret air arm was gradually being established under the cover of civilian flying clubs. During 1938, the existence of the Royal Hungarian Air Force was finally made known and was re-organised and expanded to become an independent service in January 1939.
