Formed in 1983, the Servicio Aéreo de Policia (SAPOL) is the Aviation Force of the National Police of Colombia and operates under the command of the Counter-narcotics Directorate / Direcciòn Anti-Narcòticos (DIRAN). SAPOL is the largest police aviation force in South America, with support from the US Department of State who run the Aerial Eradication Program (EAP) under the Plan Colombia. Operating from 3 main bases and 5 secondary detachments, Coca and poppy fields are sprayed by Air Tractor AT-802s, with Colombian operated helicopters providing necessary SAR and gunship support during eradication missions.
