At the heart of this installation lies a quiet dialogue between beauty and fear. The flower you see, a lotus, symbolizes purity and selfhood — delicate, yet strong. But this lotus does not bloom freely. It is surrounded, guarded, and hidden by spider lilies, flowers often linked to death and loss in Japanese culture.
This piece seeks to embody the quiet ache of shyness, the invisible armor worn by those who struggle with depression. A state where the soul recoils inward, building walls so high and thick that even light – or hope - struggles to enter. To the outside world, this often appears as numbness, as masks — carefully constructed faces worn to blend in, to survive. But beneath these layers, the true self remains unseen, untouched.
While pure, what is beauty when it is not expressed?
The lotus, like the human heart, will only reveal itself when approached with patience and care. It will not open on command, nor for the curious glance of a stranger. Only through presence, softness, and time will its hidden beauty slowly unfold.
Feedback and observations
🌸 The was some very engaging and people wanted to interact with it.
🌸 Initially, people couldn't initially figure out why the lotus opens and closes.
🌸 People tried to wait until the lotus would open again.
🌸 People suggested I could add more interactions with the flower based on how far away you are from it or how long you have been with it
🌸 Using a different motion sensor could hide away the electronic parts and potentiolly add more interaction (fear, relaxation, comfort, etc.)
🌸 People wished there were more flowers
Some final notes
The cyrlic letter for 'L' is depicted as an 'Л'. This often leads to confusion as it looks similar to the letter 'N' in the latin alphabet. This was intended here as the Lotus is initially hidden from view to the user - thus a 'no'-tus.
The installation contains several servo's and LED panels that alter the way that installation is perceived. bright colors such as pink reveal themselves when nobody is around, but darker shades of purple and blue overwhelm the installation once it is approached.
There is no intended way to perceive the installation, I want users to anthropomorphize with the installation in whatever way they see fit. There lies a deeper narrative within the piece which holds a personal meaning to me which due to my own shyness I will not reveal; perhaps with appropriate care and time. The mystery lies within the unknown.
