In all of your work, you must find, evaluate, use and reference evidence. A podcast or video is no different. It must use evidence and contain frequent references.
Three steps to referencing in a podcast or a video:
In a podcast or video you need to be especially vigilant about referencing. As you are speaking, it is easy to slip up and forget to reference the evidence you are using. Use these three steps to successful referencing in a podcast.
1. Write your reference
The best way to ensure you reference effectively is to write out a script of what you are going to record, and include details or links to the references as you would for any piece of written work. For example:
The vast amount of information on the internet provides opportunities for those with mental health challenges to locate information and support. However, self-diagnosis online can also lead to "cyberchondria", which can lead to misunderstandings and increased anxiety.
2. Convert your reference
Once you've written (and redrafted, and read out-loud to check) a piece that you're happy with, you can 'convert' this from a hypercitation to a verbal reference. For example:
The vast amount of information on the internet provides opportunities for those with mental health challenges to locate information and support. However, self-diagnosis online can also lead to what White and Horvitz have called "cyberchondria", which can lead to misunderstandings and increased anxiety.
3. List in show notes
When you create digital content such as a video or podcast, you need to demonstrate the evidence you have used. To do this you'll create show notes.
Show notes are a way to provide your listener or viewer with detail of the evidence that you've used to create your work. They must be accessible, useful and include links to the evidence (via hypercitation). There are many different way to create show notes - and each time you create them they'll probably be different as they have to fit with the work you have created and the audience you had in mind for that work.
Following the above example, your show notes might list:
White and Horvitz's 2009 Cyberchondria: Studies of the Escalation of Medical Concerns in Web Search
You can find some examples of show notes at the bottom of this page.
Frequently asked questions:
How do I reference in a podcast or a video?
Verbally. All verbal references must also be listed in a bibliography.
How do I create a verbal reference?
Write out in text references in your script just as you would for any piece of written work. Then 'convert' them to verbal references by incorporating them into the sentences. Read aloud to check it makes sense.
Do I need a bibliography?
Yes! Whether you've written an essay or created a podcast or video, you MUST submit a bibliography in a word document alongside your work. This must include EVERY piece of evidence you have referenced, including verbal references, image references and text references.
