50 Kidnappers, 672 Days Miya Shem's Mother: "The fact that other kidnappers are dying there makes it very difficult for her to cope"
Keren Shem, mother of captivity survivor Miya Shem, still doesn't know her soul, even after a year and eight months since her daughter was released from Hamas captivity. "I haven't worked since October 7," she says. "I'm a single mother of four children, and I can't do anything else except rehabilitating them and everything related to the kidnappers."
To this day, Keren can't sleep at night because of thoughts about the kidnappers. "This is the situation the families are in, and no outsider will understand. Even though my daughter is here, we're still there. It's not a cliché: Until this story is closed, we can't recover." The difficult documentaries of the kidnappers Eviatar David and Rom Breslavsky, which were released last week, overwhelmed Keren. “You see the terrible process of going from distress videos to death videos,” she describes. “Anyone with a bit of humanity can’t contain it.”
Her daughter, Mia, was the first whose footage from captivity was released after October 7. Mia, then 21, was kidnapped from a party in Nova Reim with her best friend, Elia Toledano, 28, who was also kidnapped and killed about a month later in an IDF attack. During the kidnapping, she was shot in the hand and seriously injured. On November 30, 2023, after 55 days in captivity, she was released as part of the first hostage deal.
Final comments
The most critical error in both the English and Spanish translations is the repeated mistranslation of the Hebrew word "חטופים" (khatufim). This word means "hostages" or "abducted people." However, in the English and Spanish translations, it is incorrectly translated as "kidnappers" and "secuestradores," respectively. The number 50 refers to hostages, not “kidnappers.
This changes the meaning significantly, because the text is about hostages and survivors, not perpetrators. In both translations, the word “kidnappers” is used several times where the context means hostages.
There are also small tone differences (Spanish sounding smoother, English more literal) and slight shifts in nuance with certain words (like “asesinada” vs “killed”).
In conclusion, while the overall structure and narrative are preserved in both translations, the catastrophic mistake of translating "hostages" as "kidnappers" completely inverts the central meaning and makes the text factually inaccurate. Both translations are essentially telling a different, and incorrect, story from the original Hebrew source.
