Okta: Multi-Factor Authentication

Have you signed up for Okta?

This message was originally sent in June. Please take action on this if you have not already signed up in Okta for multi-factor authentication.

This message is for those who have not activated an Okta multi-factor authentication(MFA) account. Many of you contacted the helpdesk regarding the sign up notification for Okta because the activation link expired before you were able to set your account up with a multi-factor method. Please follow the instructions below to activate your Okta account now. For more information on Okta and MFA please look at the home page announcements in MyCN.

Activate Okta for Multi-factor authentication. Okta Activation must be completed to access Applications when they are moved to Okta. You should activate now so you will have access to apps (email, banner, etc.) in the next phase. Some Columbia State applications will be only be accessible using your Okta account including account management to update or reset your password.

Get started by clicking https://columbiastate.okta.com/

  • Login with your full email address (User@ColumbiaState.edu) and current PVT username and PWD

  • Follow the directions on the screen to setup an authentication method. You will be required to enter a code during the setup of each method selected. NOTE: You can select multiple methods (preferred).

    • Okta Verify and Google Authenticator are free apps for your mobile device. These apps generate and display new codes periodically.

      • Download either app (or both) on your mobile device. Select the method from the link. Open the mobile app during setup when you are provided with a QR code to scan

      • When asked for a code from the app, open the app on your mobile device and find the account in the list. Enter the numbers displayed for your email address

    • SMS Authentication will send a text message containing a code to the cell number you enter

    • Voice Authentication will make a phone call to the phone number setup. Answer the call to receive the code.

  • The ‘secondary’ email address should be your personal email address. Be sure to open your personal email, look for a confirmation email and confirm the secondary email address change. This does not change your primary email address. It remains your username@columbiastate.edu.

  • The phone number should be a number that is convenient to reach you during hours that you use Columbia State resources. If you are usually remote, please supply a mobile number (personal or work).

  • Security question: Select a question from the drop-down list and provide an answer. Or, create a custom security question/answer (make it unique) by selecting the custom option at the bottom of the displayed list

Please contact the helpdesk (931-540-2650) or helpdesk@columbiastate.edu or me if you have questions. We will be glad to help you through the setup process.
