History of the MUB
The Memorial Union Building has a rich history that began with its planning in the summer of 1947. After receiving approval on June 6, 1950, with a budget of 1.3 million dollars for construction, the MUB opened its doors on May 5, 1952. Over the years, the building underwent several significant expansions and renovations. In 1989, a large expansion project added a food court and additional conference rooms while also addressing weathered parts of the building. Subsequent years saw further enhancements, including the addition of a second-floor balcony in 2002 and the installation of a state-of-the-art visual system and a new audiovisual system in the Alumni Lounge in 2008. The MUB continued to evolve, with expansions to the Student Organization Suite in 2009, updates to the food court in 2010, and remodeling of ground floor restrooms in 2012. In 2014, the building underwent a significant transformation with a 3,000 square foot addition on the south side and remodeling of another 1,500 square feet on the main level. These continuous improvements and expansions reflect the MUB's commitment to meeting the needs of its users and providing a modern and functional space for various activities and gatherings.
