After World War II, plans for a new building to be home to housing and auxiliary services began. Post World War II, the GI bill sent many veterans to Universities around the country, often to schools who did not have the capacity to hold them all, as was the case at Michigan Tech. By February 1949, alumni had successfully raised $200,000 for the project. Although this amount was below the target of $300,000, it was enough to justify borrowing $1,300,000 dollars for the construction of the Memorial Union Building in 1950. Less than years later, on May 5th, 1952, the building was opened to the public.Â
The Memorial Union Building has adapted to meet the needs of students during its over 70 year history. In 1989, a food court and additional conference rooms were added. In the 21st century, the second floor gained a balcony and the ballroom gained a new sound system. Restrooms and the food court were updated as well. The latest addition, the John Edgar McAllister Welcome Center opened in 2014. The Welcome Center serves as a new location for campus tours welcome incoming Michigan Tech students.
