The Memorial Union Building or “The MUB” was built in 1952 with the intent of putting all auxiliary services in one place on campus after World War II. This being said the building has been renovated and renewed over the course of the building's lifespan and now has many more purposes it fulfills within the campus setting. The building is comprised of four floors, those being the basement, ground floor, first floor, and second floor. Each floor has its own unique characteristics which fit together to make a relatively complex building.
Above is a picture of how the MUB looked when it was first built in 1952. The building itself took about five years to make from start (1947) to finish (1952). During the beginning stages of the project the Alumni committee was actually appointed to run the finances for the project. With the help of the Community the Alumni committee conducted a successful fundraiser and raised 200,000 of their 300,000 goal. The Alumni got so close to their goal that the Board of Trustees decided the project was worthwhile and approved a 1.3 million dollar loan to finish the construction of the project.
The MUB remained relatively untouched for almost 40 years, except for some general repairs to the building, up until 1989. Due to an increase in enrollment a food court was added on the ground floor. Students would now have an extra space to eat, study, and lounge while on campus. This food court is still in use today and was even renovated in 2010 to make it more welcoming and efficient as well as introducing more diversity into the food that is served.
In addition to the renovations made on the ground floor the Isle Royal Ballroom, located on the second floor, also underwent a complete remodel. Construction was conducted in 2008 which included the installation of a state of the art audio and visual system, as well as a new Alumni lounge. Just a year later the Student Organization Suite, located on the first floor, was expanded in order to accommodate office spaces for 17 student organizations. This space is also used as a resource center for the 200+ student organizations on campus.
The final change the building has undergone as of now was the John Edgar McAllister Welcome Center. This 3,000 square foot addition was added to the south side of the building in 2014. Along with the addition, 1,500 square feet of the main level was remodeled. This construction allowed a new location for the admissions office to be able to house visitors.
The MUB stands today as a valued space used by all students.
