1.3 Behavioral Expectations
School has five or fewer positively stated behavioral expectations and examples by setting/location for student and staff behaviors (i.e., school teaching matrix) defined and in place.

Scoring Criteria
0 = Behavioral expectations have not been identified, are not all positive, or are more than 5 in number
1 = Behavioral expectations identified but may not include a matrix or be posted
2 = Five or fewer behavioral expectations exist that are positive, posted, and identified for specific settings (i.e., matrix) AND at least 90% of staff can list at least 67% of the expectations
Main Idea
Having school-wide, positive expectations is among the best ways to establish a positive social culture.
Guiding Questions
- Has the team identified five or fewer behavioral expectations?
- Have rules been developed by location / setting and agreed upon?
- Are they posted publically throughout the school?
- For Elementary Schools:
- Are the posters posted at eye-level?
- Do the posters have visual icons for PreK-3 rd grade?
- For Elementary Schools:
- Have staff been involved in the development of expectations and rules?
- Do the expectations apply to both students and staff?
- Have the expectations been defined and are developmentally appropriate, so that students, staff, and parents understand?
- For early learners, have pictures been used to express the expectations and rules?
Surface Level to meet criteria
- Has the team identified five or fewer behavioral expectations?
- Do they include examples by location / setting?
- Are they posted publicly throughout the school?
Deeper Level for a stronger program
- Expectations are Observable, Measurable, Positively Stated, Understandable, and Always Applicable
- Rationale: All expectations should be easily understood by all stakeholders and have transfer-ability to other area in and out of school
