Daylighting is the practice of placing windows, skylights, other openings, and reflective surfaces so that sunlight can provide effective internal lighting. The aim is to maximise the harvesting of the free natural resources or to reduce building energy consumption. Energy consumption is one of the world issues to be resolved. Office building use a lot of energy to operate during operating hours which some on daily basis.
According to Carbontrust, Artificial Lighting contributed the second highest amount of energy usage in commercial office building. Malaysian’s office building facing the same Daylighting issues alhough receiving abundant amount of daylight through out the year due to the tropical climate. Most of the office design didn’t allowed daylight into building from the centre part of the building contributing to the usage of artificial lighting during the day.
ATRIUM can provide the solution for the issue but it is not widely used due to the solar heat gain from the Atrium into the building. Daylighting from Atrium can reach its optimum performance when using a skylight window but causes massive solar heat gain. This thesis will provide alternative for skylight window as the medium to channel daylighting into the building from Atrium space.
