Kampung Medan is situated in Petaling Jaya. It is considered as a strategic place to stay due to its proximity to Kuala Lumpur and Shah Alam.
Previously, there was some tin mines near Kampung Medan. Curiously, the existing squatter settlements at that time had no connection with the tin mines.
The squatter settlements in Klang Lama exist because of job opportunities created in the city of Kuala Lumpur especially in the industrial sectors. But the higher cost of living in the city forced people to explore to build settlements outside Kuala Lumpur.
In Kampung Medan, there were 7 other ‘Kampungs’ as settlements especially for Malay settlers, but one of the ‘Kampung’ known as Kampung Gandhi has a majority of Indian settlers.
The impact of the squatter settlements in the Petaling Jaya Selatan (PJS) area especially in Kampung Medan faced slow development growth as compared to other parts of Petaling District as a whole.
