We went out the the prairie and measured 2 pieces of big blue stem and did that for 6 plots (only grass plots). Then we went to the plots that have grass and flowers are measured 2 pieces of the grass there(grass and flower plots). We went 12 plots and went in the middle of them or we found a really tall strand of grass. We used a yard stick and measured the strands of grass from top to bottom.
The free state prairie is a tallgrass prairie located behind the football stadium at Lawrence free state high school in Lawrence Kansas. The prairie was originally a training field for the football team. It started as a desire to connect people with their natural environment. The project was led by Julie Schwarting a biology teacher at free state and Helen Alexander a Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Kansas. The first prairie seeds were planted in 2014 and with the help of many other people and organizations that have helped over the years the prairie has become what it is today. Our project focuses on the average height of big bluestem and whether the average was affected by the type of plot we measured 2 pieces of big bluestem in all of the grass only plots and in all of the grass and extra forbes plots.

We wanted to know whether the big bluestem in the plots with only grass had a different average height than the plots that have grass and extra forbes. We wanted to do this experiment because we were interested in whether having more competition for resources would affect the way the big bluestem grows.
