The free state highschool prairie is a unique tallgrass restoration. This year in biology we had to conduct an experiment. For are experiment My group wanted to figure out what types of grasshoppers are in the prairie and we also wanted to figure out why and how they camouflage into plants. To find this out we went onto the prairie and looked around for grasshoppers. We were able to find many different species of grasshoppers and usually they were all on the same type of plant camouflaging into it. Sometimes they were hard to find because they were camouflaged! - Sarah

My group chose this experiment because it seemed like a fun question to do and different from what others were doing. Grasshoppers are 2nd on the trophic level. Grasshoppers are herbivores and are considered primary consumers . A grasshopper's main non living abiotic factor is sunlight since grasshoppers thrive in warm environments. There are many different variations of colors for grasshoppers they'll camouflage into wherever they are living. When we were looking for grasshoppers we usually found them in the grass or camouflaged into the indian grass. Grasshoppers are aware of their coloring and usually try to find something of that color to camouflage into. - Sarah

On the first day Chloe took pictures of grasshoppers and Lawrence captured a grasshopper with his net.
On the second day Chloe and Sarah looked for grasshoppers, and identified the plants they were on.
On the third day Chloe, Sarah and Lawrence took pictures of more plants to identify.
