What we did.
On October 27th, 2022, Me (Fletcher Mack, Visual Lead), Eric (Research Lead), And Gustavo (Documenter) went out to the prairie and laid out 6 sticky traps, 2 in each plot type. However, as we did not have another designated day to collect data, Eric went back to the prairie on November 3rd, 2022 in order to collect the sticky traps.
The plot types we had placed each trap in were decently spread out, as we believed it would allow us to more accurately see if there were more bugs or different bugs in each plot type if there were a good distance between them.
Where we set the sticky traps
The Results
We found lots of bugs, but unfortunately we could not find our trap in plot 12.
Plot 10 was grasses and 2x forbs, and it came up with no bugs and just small specks of dirt. Bugs.
Plot 7, which was once again Seeded grasses and 2x forbs, had just dirt, though a bit more than plot 10. No Bugs. Based on both plot 7 and 10, it seems like Seeded Grasses and 2x forbs ended up having the least bugs.
Plot 14, which was seeded grasses and forbs had some flies and other bugs that we were unable to identify. Additionally, a bird may have been caught in it or happened to lose some feathers while flying above, as there are some bird feathers in the top right corner. By my count there were 5 bugs.
Our first seeded grasses only plot, plot 3, already visibly has much more bugs than all previous plots. There are several flies and other small flying bugs that we were unsure of what they were, a caterpillar, what looks to be a wasp, and a pill-bug. By my count, there were 28 bugs.
This one which was also just seeded grasses had the most bugs, at a total of 32. It primarily consisted of small flying bugs, like the flies seen earlier.
Ultimately seeded grasses ended up having the most with 60 bugs total. Something to note is that the ones with forbs had the least bugs, while purely seeded grasses ended up having an incredibly large amount of bugs, so it is possible that the forbs is what affects the amount of bugs in each plot type.
