Spanish I (9-12) (Full year)
An understanding of basic English grammar and parts of speech are necessary before enrolling in this course. Spanish I focuses heavily on preparing students to speak in the present tense. Students will learn how to ask and answer questions, greet each other, and should be able to hold a conversation by the end of the year. Students will learn to talk about clothes, family, school, hobbies, body, food and much more. Students will also receive instruction on cultural differences and holidays, and we will celebrate Day of the Dead in November.
Spanish II (10-12) (Full year) (Prerequisite: Spanish I with a “C” or higher)
Students will be expected to remember what was learned in Spanish I and build on it. Spanish II will solidify the present tense by learning irregular and reflexive verbs. The majority of Spanish II will focus on learning to speak in the past tenses (imperfect and preterite) and the basics of the perfect tense. Students will also learn to talk about advanced school topics, house and furniture, nature and animals, places around town, and improve extensively on their vocabulary of verbs and food.
Spanish III (11-12) (Full year) (Prerequisite: Spanish II with a “C” or higher)
Students will be expected to build on their previous knowledge of Spanish. They will learn to use commands in the present tense, speak in the future tense and the future conditional, as well as improving knowledge of the perfect tense. Students will learn to use multiple tenses in the same sentence and will learn to move between tenses as they talk. Vocabulary in Spanish III includes advanced body/medical, advanced hobbies, technology and innovation, current events and social issues. Students should also expect to learn the history of Spanish-speaking countries.
Spanish IV (12) (One or both semesters) (Prerequisite: Spanish III with a “C” or higher)
Students will be expected to build on their previous knowledge of Spanish. In this class students will learn how to use the conditional and subjunctive tenses to talk about unknowns, as well as express desires and wishes for other people. Students in Spanish IV will learn about economy and business, occupations, travel and vacations. Students will be prepped to take the AAPPL for the Seal of Biliteracy in December and will be tested on communication skills throughout the year with verbal/conversational assessments and activities.
