ACT Test Prep (11-12) (One semester) (Prerequisite one semester of Algebra II [or currently enrolled] and one semester of Chemistry [or currently enrolled])
This course is designed for college-bound juniors and seniors. Students will learn strategies and tips for improving performance on the ACT in all four test areas (English, reading, mathematics, and science). Students will be empowered with personal self-regulation and self-efficacy strategies. The course is not designed to reteach missing math or reading skills; it is meant to be a review of previously-learned material in English, reading, mathematics, and science. In special situations, a sophomore may be allowed to enroll in this course by administrative approval.
College Lab (11-12) (One semester)
Students will be given one block to take an online college class of their choice. Students are responsible for payment of fees for any course they enroll in. The location may vary depending on teacher availability, or may be in the library. Grades received for courses taken through the College Lab will be recorded on the student’s official transcript, and courses will be taken for dual credit. The dual credit grade will be the same as the letter grade issued by the college and will be figured into the student’s GPA. Full semester college classes are typically three credit hours. This will count as one-half credit of high school credit. If grades are listed in PowerSchool throughout the semester, they only reflect the student’s attendance in the College Lab class. The official grade will be given to the Guidance Office by the college at the end of the semester and will be recorded in PowerSchool, on the student’s grade report, and on their official transcript at that time.
College Release (11-12) (Administrative approval required)
College Release is a provision made to enable Clearwater High School students to take classes through a post-secondary educational institution during the school year (other than the college courses offered for dual credit at CHS). During first semester, students will work online in the building unless administrative approval is given to do differently.
Driver Education (9-12) (.5 credit) Summer Only
Students must be at least 14 years old by January 1 of the year the course is offered to take the course that summer. Class size is limited, and a fee will be charged for the class. All classroom and driving competencies must be met to pass the course. Students must have a valid instruction permit to enroll in March.
Principles of Electrorally (9-12) (First Semester)
Electorally at Clearwater High School has a rich winning history that goes back over 20 years. In this one semester class, students will explore the various components assiociated with designing, building, driving, racing and maintaining an electric race car team. With speeds reaching almost 45 mps, a geat deal of planning and effort goes into maintaining a succcessful race team. Participation on the race team is not required, but is encouraged.
Introduction to Sports Officiating (10-12) (Fall and/or Spring)
Introduction to Sports Officiating is a one semester elective course. It does not fulfill physical education credits. It is an introductory course for students interested in sports officiating. Topics include the rules and their interpretations, definitions, signals, mechanics, ethics, exceptions to the rules and positioning. With successful completion of the class students will have the ability to officiate at various levels and manage responsibilities that come with the role. The course will cover the following sports: basketball, football, volleyball, baseball and softball. The course will utilize the RefReps training program endorsed and approved by the NFHS, NCAA, KSHSAA. Can be repeated for credit.
Leadership (9-12) (One Semester)
This class will help students to dedicate themselves to advance their personal knowledge, awareness and capability to lead in order to better serve our school and community. Student s will work together to achieve mutual goals throu volunteerism, service projects, school and community programs, peer education, and a commitment to one another and their school and community as a whole. Practicing skills such as goal setting, communication, and organization will be an emphasis throughout this course. This class will be offered for freshmen through seniors who are currently involved in a school club or organization. StuCo students who are part of the executive board should strongly consider enrolling in this class.
Learning Lab (9-12) (One semester) Approval Only
This class is designed for students who would benefit from study time or who are taking a high school credit recovery class. Students enrolled in Learning Lab must show motivation to learn and use the time appropriately. Students may be asked to set goals and tack progress as part of their grade. The class can be repeated for credit.
Office Assistant (12) (One semester) (Office staff approval required)
Office assistants help the office staff with assigned clerical tasks such as answering the phone, mail, and making photo copies. Occasional heavy lifting will be required. Office assistants will have study time if their help is not needed by the office staff. Transportation is preferred in order to be able to drive to the football field, CIMS, etc.
Podcasting, Broadcasting, and Vodcasting (10-12) (Prerequisite: “B” average in English classes and two letters of reference from teachers)
This course is designed to expose students to the processes and technologies associated with creating audio and video productions. Students will create original content with a focus on celebrating the achievements and successes of Clearwater students. The basic curriculum for the class will incorporate the Kansas College and Career Ready Standards for Speaking and Listening. The class enrollment will be limited to 12.
School to Career Mentorship (11-12) (One semester) (Prerequisite: Teacher approval)
This course offers students a work-based educational experience that pairs a student with a business/industry mentor in their chosen career exploration area. The students will be required to provide their own transportation to the job site. This real world learning through workplace experience will provide the student with knowledge about their career pursuit. Prerequisites include three teacher recommendations, a resume, and an application. Can be repeated for credit.
Senior Release (12) (Second semester only)
Parental permission is required for senior release, and a contract will be signed by the parent and student before senior release time will be approved. Seniors with senior release will attend CHS only for the courses they want to take and for courses they need to take to fulfill graduation requirements and/or Qualified Admissions and/or State of Kansas Scholarship Curriculum requirements. Students requesting Senior Release must not be short on graduation requirements. Those participating in KSHSAA activities must be enrolled in five courses of unit weight (X-L Seminar, Tribe Time, Teacher Assistant, and Office Assistant will not meet this requirement). Students cannot be guaranteed that desired courses will be scheduled in consecutive blocks or on a single day. Students will not be in the high school building during their Senior Release blocks.
Teacher Assistant (11 (second semester only) -12) (One semester) (Teacher approval required)
Students wishing to be a teacher assistant must indicate on their enrollment form what teacher they have arranged to assist. Good attendance and a record of being dependable and reliable are prerequisites to being a teacher assistant. Students will assist a classroom teacher in duties such as taking attendance, playground supervision (with sponsoring teacher), individual tutoring, bulletin board preparation, etc. Preference is given to students who are considering a career in education. The class can be repeated for credit.
Teaching as a Career (10-12) (One semester)
This course introduces students to the field of education and teaching. Topics include learning standards, lesson plan components, history of education in the U.S., the realities of a teaching career, investigation of professional expectation, teaching strategy and philosophy, among college preparedness skill development. It is also offered as a concurrent enrollment through Wichita State University at a discounted rate. After class completion, students have the option of enrolling in Teaching Internship.
Teaching Observation (10-12) (One semester) (Prerequisite: Teaching as a Career or concurrent enrollment)
Are you considering a career in teaching? In this course you would be placed in several different grade levels and classrooms throughout the district. During that time you will be identifying and documenting different learning environments, instructional types, and preparation processes.
Teaching Internship (11-12) (One semester) (Prerequisite: Teaching as a Career and Teacher approval)
This course prepares students to teach and guide others. The course typically provides opportunities for students to develop their own teaching objectives, to design lesson plans, and to experience teaching under the guidance of a licensed teacher. Students examine and practice teaching strategies, learning styles, time management and planning strategies, presentation and questioning skills, classroom management, and evaluation techniques.
Yearbook and Media (9-12) (Full year) (prerequisite: application)
Coursework includes graphic design basics, page layout design, copy writing, interviewing assignments, and photography. During this class students create the CHS yearbook. Students should anticipate computer work with InDesign, Illustrator, and PhotoShop programs. Attending school events outside of class time is required for photography assignments. All students are responsible for selling advertisements, taking photos, and writing for the yearbook. Enrollment in this class is a yearlong commitment. Students will be subject to semester review and may be dismissed by the instructor. Limit: 15
Zero Hour Weights (9-12) (One semester) (class meets before regular school hours)
We offer a weight training program that has produced tremendous results in weight lifting gains, speed development, weight lifting techniques, movement improvements, discipline, team building and overall athleticism. Working out together and helping each other improve is a team building activity. Gains will be recorded in Bench Press, Clean and Squat. We will perform a variety of lifts and programs that will be working for ttoal body improvement. Expect a variety of lifting programs that will alternate reps on a total body work-out, Push-puss-legs work-out, with a possible rotation of isolation or station conditioning. Showing up early in the morning and working to achieve goals is a huge discipline development that is an important skill a young person can develop during their high school career.
