Band (9-12, full year)
Band is open to students who were enrolled in band the previous year or have permission from the director to enroll.
Students will develop and refine music reading skills, individual playing technique, basic music theory and aural skills, and an appreciation of music through rehearsal and performance. Responsibilities of the band include performing at home athletic events, concerts, interscholastic competitions, and others as assigned. Emphasis will be placed on the quality of band performances, rather than the quantity or complexity of performances.
Almost all band performances will be held outside of regular school hours. Attendance at performances is mandatory, unless otherwise informed by the director, and is for a grade. Special attire may be required as per the band syllabus. By enrolling in band, the student agrees to attend all required performances.
Jazz Ensemble (9-12, full year)
Jazz ensemble is available to dedicated band students as an extension of the regular band class. As such, a student must already be enrolled in band to enroll in jazz ensemble unless a specific exception is granted by the director.
Members of the jazz ensemble will develop an understanding of how to apply established band fundamentals and techniques to jazz and rock styles, develop beginning improvisation skills, acquire intermediate music theory knowledge, and foster an appreciation for listening to jazz music. The class may also on occasion perform music in a classical style as a chamber ensemble. Additionally, members may be asked to assist in organizational and clerical duties as-needed for the benefit of the program at-large. Such responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: music or instrument cataloguing and inventory, setting up a space for an upcoming concert, loading and unloading marching band equipment, etc.
Almost all jazz performances will be held outside of regular school hours. Attendance at performances is mandatory, unless otherwise informed by the director, and is for a grade. Special attire may be required as per the band syllabus. By enrolling in jazz, the student agrees to attend all required performances.
