Intro to Health Care (9-12) (One semester)
This course provides students with the basic knowledge of health/wellness professionals in private business and industry. It integrates the skills necessary for working in a healthcare related field by encouraging the development of strong interpersonal skills and both verbal and written communication skills. Special emphasis is also given to an introduction to medical terminology and an introduction to the laws and aid programs found in the healthcare industry. Students will also put their case study analysis, laboratory, and research skills to the test while playing the role of a provider/researcher in a variety of healthcare related fields and will have the opportunity to investigate potential careers in the healthcare industry. Grading is based on daily work, quizzes, group work, labs, and exams. Students should have an interest in a healthcare related field and be willing to develop the skills necessary for working in the healthcare industry.
Medical Terminology (10-12) (One semester ) (Online only) (Prerequisite: Biology)
The class presents basic principles of medical word building. The study develops competencies in the basic elements forming medical words, categorizing major suffixes and group prefixes. Anatomical, physiological and pathological terms are reviewed so students better understand special medical procedures. This is the introductory course in medical terminology and is intended for all who desire knowledge in this subject. The course will be taken online through WSU Tech. This course is offered tuition free, but a book purchase is required through WSU Tech.
Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) (11-12) (First semester only) (Prerequisite: At least a 2.5 cumulative gpa and a qualifying reading score)
This course will provide students with training in basic nursing skills needed to assist in a variety of healthcare settings. The course is developed with the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services. The Certified Nursing Assistant Curriculum Guidelines is the backbone of the course. Course time includes the didactic portion, skills lab time in the classroom, and clinical time in an area long-term care facility. Occasional extra clinical hours outside of the regular school day are required during the semester. This course is offered through WSU Tech for a cost of approximately $155. To receive certification as a CNA, students must pass the state CNA examination upon completion of the course. Students will also receive Home Health Aide instruction as part of the semester.
Sports Medicine IA (10-12) (One semester) (Prerequisite: Intro to Health Care and Care of Athletes)
This class will introduce various sports medicine careers. It will also discuss legalities in the medical profession, emergency action plan, pre-participation physical exams, prehabilitation and rehabilitation, nutrition, dietary supplements and performance enhancers, and psychology and it's importance in understanding athletic performance.
Sports Medicine IB (11-12) (One semester) (Prerequisite: Sports Medicine IA passed with a "C" or better)
This class will focus on assessment, evaluation, and treatment of injuries. It will discuss First Aid/CPR/Blood Borne Pathogens, therapeutic modalities, taping and wrapping, bleeding, and shock. It will also introduce bones and soft tissues and kinesiology.
