As we settle into the new academic year, I want to express my gratitude for all the work you do. This is a very active time across the medical education continuum. Admissions' interview season is in full swing and many are involved with the Multiple Mini Interview format that we are continuing this year. As always, the applicant pool is amazing. UME and GME are well into their fall sessions with nearly 2000 learners combined. This is also a peak busy time for CPD and our programs in Mortuary Science, Anatomy Bequest, and Simulation. Mortuary Science just completed a re-accreditation site visit (I understand they are the gold standard for Mort Sci programs!), while Anatomy Bequest is preparing for their Service of Gratitude on Monday, November 12. Our simulation program is also in a growth period as they prepare for the HSEC and the integration with AHC Simulation/IERC.
We couldn't do any of the above without each and every one of you -- and we are certainly stronger when we all work together and help each other accomplish our goals. This is certainly the case for the employee engagement projects that have started.
Just a reminder: LCME preparation is a major focus of the office as we prepare our Data Collection Instrument (DCI) and get ready to have our launch event of November 27. It is critical that all assignments for the DCI have the highest level of priority.
Finally, it is very exciting to watch HSEC being built. Remember you can watch and learn about construction progress and even watch a time-lapse of the project. More importantly, groups are meeting to work thru the operational aspects of HSEC and faculty development workshops on teaching in active learning classrooms are continuing.
Please know all the work you do to enhance medical education is appreciated.

Employee Engagement Phase II - Projects Announced
At the June OME Quarterly Staff meeting, inter-continuum teams were invited to submit innovation proposals to increase employee engagement in three areas:
There is good cooperation and sharing of ideas between my department and other departments.
Conditions in my job allow me to be as productive as I can be.
Given your choice, how long would you plan to continue working for the University of Minnesota?
Two teams were selected and the following proposals were shared at the September all-staff meeting.
1) Professional Partnership Program (Team: Andrea Medina, Christy Illig, Jamie Larson, Sarah Dohm)
Proposal: Addresses two of the engagement priorities: “ There is good cooperation and sharing of ideas between my department and other departments ” and “ Given your choice, how long would you plan to continue working for the University of Minnesota ?”
One piece focuses on collaboration and knowledge sharing to improve efficacy and efficiency across the continuum. The goal is to share best practices, seek feedback on complex processes, and gain broader insight into other team members’ roles. This would promote collaboration between departments, help individuals feel integrated within the OME team, and support team members to feel that they have critical expertise and ownership of their work.
The second piece focuses on professional development through partnership and/or career-oriented affinity. Team members would have the opportunity to engage with others who have similar professional interests; team members would engage in cross-departmental work, such as “reach” projects that expose individuals to new knowledge and skills. This would offer growth opportunities for team members, which encourages employee longevity within OME, and would contribute greatly to more consistent collaboration between departments.
2) OME Handbook & Onboarding (Administrative support team: Marianne Watters, Cynthia Johnson, Janell Lopez, Priyanka Chaduvula, Patty Bailey, Gretchen Jackson, Serena Jones)
Proposal: Addresses engagement priority: “ There is good cooperation and sharing of ideas between my department and other departments ”
Part one of the project is for the team to create an OME handbook (printed and online version) that can be used as an onboarding tool for new staff and as a resource for current staff. OME staff will be asked for input for the new handbook.
Part two of the project is to update the onboarding process to include a designated department representative (e.g. administrative coordinators) who will be responsible for completing pre-employment onboarding processes (ordering computers, requesting directory/data access, etc.) for new staff.
Congratulations to both teams! Full proposals will be presented at the March all-staff meeting. Each team participant will receive a $150 stipend for professional development.
New Capital Improvement Guidelines & Process
A new Capital Improvement Guideline & Process document was shared at the September all-staff meeting and applies to all OME staff . This is the new process that will be used when requesting office furniture/equipment or office improvements (painting, carpeting, etc.) and cost exceeds $100.00.

Eric Martin LaPlant started on September 17 as Evaluation Systems Analyst for Assessment & Evaluation
Allison Siefert started on September 12 as ECM/FCT Course Manager for UME-Curriculum Team
Role: Eric is the project lead for course evaluations, and is currently working on the Pulse Survey process, which is new well-ness and educational satisfaction survey.
He works primarily with Suzanne van den Hoogenhof, Claudio Violato, and the Assessment & Evaluation team, but is looking forward to connecting with and getting to know the faculty and the office of medical education team.
Likes: "Professionally, I like data drive decision making, learning new things, and exploring ideas. I really enjoy data visualizations and can get pretty excited about finding simple and/or elegant ways to show and tell a complex story. Personally, I would see my hobbies."
Dislikes: "I’m not sure what to write here, so I will say dairy. I’m lactose intolerant (I often tell people it’s an allergy only because, in my experiences, people tend to understand an allergy is bad more often than a food intolerance is bad) I also have a major sweet tooth! It’s a constant battle of will"
Hobbies: "In my free time I enjoy:
Biking: Most days I try to get out for a bike ride around the lakes in Minneapolis, over to Minnehaha falls, or on the many bike paths throughout the twin cities. I prefer to go when it’s warm out, but have heard good things about fat tire biking and could be convinced to give it a shot. I have also been learning, teaching myself, how to fix my bike. It’s been an adventure so far, and am looking forward to understanding how it works, and how fix it in better detail.
Reading: I bet it would surprise you to learn that an analyst likes sci-fi, fantasy, and graphic novels. I am always up for a good read and enjoy exploring genres outside my wheelhouse and finding new authors work to dive into.
Home brewing: I’ve been brewing my own beer at home for a little more than 3 years now. I find it a great way to blend art and science that also satisfies my DIY, maker sensibilities. It’s an outlet that allows me to research, discover, and experiment in a low risk high reward setting. It’s also a great reason to have some friends over to enjoy a home brew.
Hockey: While I was never a strong skater myself, I am a big fan of hockey. I mostly follow the MN Wild. During my undergrad I went to UMD and rooted for the bulldogs, but now, since I work for the U, I might have to start cheering for the gophers."
Role: Working with course directors and facilitators to manage the Foundations of Clinical Thinking courses as well as sharing responsibilities for management of Essentials of Clinical Medicine courses.
Likes: "Family, pizza, beaches, and helping others"
Dislikes: "Spiders and seafood"
Hobbies: "Hiking, Swimming, Reading"

Carola, our PARS wizard, CRM genius and holiday decorator extraordinaire, you are one of a kind - thank you for all that you do! We are so excited to celebrate this impressive milestone with you. [The CPD Team]
Kudos to Michael Cullen {along with many faculty and psychology grad students} who have successfully submitted and have been accepted for publication in Academic Medicine for their research on how Structured Interview questions can predict mid-year and year-end overall performance on the milestones. A lot of hard work went into putting this paper and research study together. The GME team is very proud of the work Michael has done, and continues to do! For more info- check out the GME Connection for September. [Christy Illig]
Thank you to everyone who attended the shower for Baby Irvine! And a special thanks to Marianne, Patty, Abbe, and Cynthia for putting so much hard work into it. I had an amazing time and was blown away by the fantastic theme and decorations. I am so appreciative of all of you, and I am completely overwhelmed by the love and generosity of my OME colleagues. I better stop there or these tears welling in my eyes will turn into a full-blown pregnant lady meltdown. THANK YOU!!! [Addy no-longer-pregnant-lady Irvine]
A HUGE kudos to Rachel [Rudeen] for her amazing work organizing and running the New Student Orientation and White Coat Ceremony.
