A key milestone in medical education for our medical students and residency programs is the Match. This year we had an outstanding Match with almost all students obtaining a residency position and all residency programs successfully filling their positions. This outcome is due to both our outstanding students and programs, and the work all of you do to ensure the success of this demanding and often stressful process. Congratulations to all and thank you on the behalf of the medical school.
We are currently on a journey to transform the medical school to a “one school - three campus” model with work ongoing to launch a 4-year campus in St Cloud in collaboration with the CentraCare health care system. On February 10, 2023 the Board of Regents approved a non-binding letter of intent to continue this planning process. The goal is to matriculate a class of 20 to 24 students to the St Cloud campus beginning in August 2025. Building on the experience and success of our Duluth campus, a major focus of this new campus will be on rural health and expanding the rural physician workforce. A number of work groups (curriculum & assessment, admissions, facilities, student services, faculty/governance, and oversight) are working on the details of the campus in preparation for submitting a notification form to LCME by December 1, 2023. The work being done on the Driven to Serve curriculum is essential in providing operational details on the implementation of the curriculum to a third campus. Expanding our medical school to a new part of the state is an exciting endeavor that will enhance our ability to meet the workforce needs of the state and the future care of patients.
Thank you all for your dedication to the medical school and hard work in all of our day-to-day operations.
With great appreciation and gratitude for all you do,
Mark Rosenberg, MD
Vice Dean for Education and Academic Affairs

RPAP and MetroPAP Recruit Class of 2023-2024
The Rural and Metropolitan Physician Associate Programs are excited to welcome the Class of 2023-2024! 26 RPAP students and nine MetroPAP students will join the program in September. In October, they will begin their nine-month journeys at sites across the state!
Students received their site placements in January. A celebratory breakfast was held on the Duluth campus, where incoming RPAP and MetroPAP students added a pin to a map of Minnesota to show where they would be next year.
Congratulations to all students beginning the programs this fall!
Match Day... The Match Day Celebration for the Class of 2023 on March 17th was a huge success! 221 seniors matched into residency positions to continue their medical training. 47.9% are pursuing Primary Care and 44.8% will continue training in Minnesota. (See match results here)
At the beginning of Match Week, 95.1% of students were fully matched. The national average before the Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program (SOAP) was 93.7 %. At the end of the week, 98.7% of our students obtained a residency. Those who did not will continue to receive support to go through the Match next year.
Congratulations to the Class of 2023! We are so proud of you.
Greetings... from Mortuary Science! I am grateful for the opportunity to share with you the following news updates and information about our program:
Admissions Cycle: We continue to review admissions applications to our program on a rolling basis, and several students have confirmed their attendance for fall semester matriculation. This past January we welcomed 12 new students to the program, bringing our total enrollment to 80 students. We expect over 30 new students to enroll in our program this year.
Continuing Professional Education: Our spring semester education webinar series for funeral directors, health care workers, and colleagues in allied professions has begun! Last month instructor Judge Doug Meslow spoke on non-compete agreements in the context of potential changes to state and national laws. This month instructor Janet McGee will share the story of the death of her young son as a result of a furniture tip-over accident. Janet will provide resources to aid professionals in working with and caring for grieving parents. To register to attend Janet’s (Zoom) presentation, click HERE. Future presentations will consider organ and tissue donation; service to families who are caring for loved ones with dementia; and other topics related to end of life care. All are welcome to watch and participate via Zoom; post-event
recordings are available for viewing HERE.
Recruiting Activities: Last month I was able to participate in a high school recruiting event in southwestern Minnesota at Worthington High School. It was great to meet with several prospective students as they work to discern a career path. We continue to be present at career fairs held both on campus and also at local and regional colleges and universities.
Crookston Partnership: We are finalizing our partnership agreement with our Crookston campus (UMC), for the goal of formalizing our “2 + 2” articulation agreement. We are working collaboratively across campuses to provide students with the opportunity to complete their first two years of college through UMC, completely online if they so desire. Here on the Twin Cities campus, work continues to build a pathway that will allow students to complete our entire program online, in collaboration with UMC and funeral home partners.
With all best wishes as we transition to spring and warmer weather!

Congratulations Blake Barber!
Blake will be leaving the OME intern pool when he graduates this May. In the two years that Blake has been with us, he has done amazing work in many of our programs, but spent the majority of his time working in the RPAP/MetroPAP program. The work he has done in this program has been invaluable and he will be sorely missed.
Blake majored in Finance and received (and accepted) an offer from Kimberly-Clark in Appleton, Wi (his hometown) as a financial analyst. Congratulations Blake - we wish you all the best! We will all miss you!
Professional Development Opportunity... Recently OME staff were invited to participate in a "cohort-based, professional development experience addressing fundamentals of diversity, equity and inclusion with a focus on the application in medical education."
Colleagues in the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ODEI), Matt Amundson and Shanea Turner-Smith, will facilitate monthly 90-minute sessions with our group on the topics of:
Implicit bias
Bystander interventions
Microaggression & Macroaggressions
Micro Affirmations and Allyship: Addressing Workplace Toxicity and Power Dynamics.
The series will run from May to September, concluding with a reflection and goal-setting session in September. We will determine if the cohort will meet in-person or virtually based on interest. If you would like to learn more about what will be addressed in the training series please visit the ODEI website here. Those who participate in the entire program will receive a certificate of completion.
If you are interested in participating please complete this very short interest form by no later than Tuesday, April 11 so we may establish the cohort and determine when and how the group will meet.

On February 26th, OME had one team and several individuals that competed in the Tri-U-Mah Triathlon at the RecWell Center on the Twin City-East Bank campus.
(Pictured clockwise) Claudio Violato, Adam Maier, and Eric Martin LaPlant representing our Assessment and Evaluation program, completed a 30 minute leg in the competition. The results of their efforts had them take home 1st place in the team competition and 10th place overall. Congratulations A&E team!!
(Left to Right) Hannah Holzshuh, Betsy Murray, former colleague Austin Calhoun, Mark Rosenberg, and Caroline Hilk, each completed the event individually. "It was a lot of swimming, biking, and running, but everyone enjoyed themselves."
To see the details of all of their efforts, check out the results sheet. A challenge and invitation goes out to all OME staff to join the event next year!
Nou Ka Yang, Administrative Coordinator in Student Affairs, was invited by the Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS) to join them at the pre-match event in March where they presented a special certificate of excellence and appreciation to her. The certificate was awarded, "For being the absolute backbone of the Gold Humanism Honor Society all while juggling a dozen other obligations. Your support and patience have bee invaluable to us and the members that came before us."
They also gave her a gift, congratulating her on her upcoming graduation. Nou Ka will be graduating this summer with a masters in social work.
Congratualtions Nou Ka! It is an honor to be recognized by our students for the work you do!
