Vice Dean Rosenberg, and President of the American Society of Nephrology, worked in partnership with the Department of Health and Human Services to accelerate innovation in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of kidney diseases - know as Kidney X. On July 1st Dr. Rosenberg was invited to Washington D.C. to meet with the Secretary of Health and Human Services, Alex Azar, where he presented him with the Presidential Award from the American Society of Nephrology. This award was given to Secretary Azar for his work as a non-physician to advance kidney health. On this visit Dr. Rosenberg was invited to the White House where he participated in a listening session with the Domestic Policy Council and other administration officials.
Dr. Rosenberg was then invited back to Washington D.C. on July 10th to witness President Trump signing a very special Executive Order launching the American Kidney Health Initiative. This comprehensive initiative will bring much needed changes to care for people with kidney disease. "This was the best day of my career as a Nephrologist," says Dr. Rosenberg. You can watch the event on You Tube.

Susan Culican, started on June 28th as our new Associate Dean for GME and Designated Institutional Official. She is a Pediatric Ophthalmologist and will also be a Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Neurosciences.
She comes to us from the Washington University School of Medicine (in St. Louis) where she was an associate professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, Director of Medical Education and Director for Residency Training for Ophthalmology. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology and a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Culican served on the Graduate Medical Education Committee at Washington U for 15 years with service on the Resident Wellness subcommittee. Her educational work includes development of Ophthalmology milestones and data-driven residency assessment. Her practice centers on eye conditions in children, and she also treats adults for strabismus. She has been consistently recognized on "The Best Doctors in America" list.
Dr. Culican is a transformational leader who brings a wealth of experience as a clinician, educator, researcher, and mentor. In her role as Associate Dean for GME, Dr. Culican will lead GME operations and strategy and serve as the ACGME Designated Institutional Official (DIO) for the medical school.
On a more personal "get-to-know-her" note:
Likes: "I love a good Midwest storm. Not the destructive kind, or the kind that settle and don't leave for months. But I flew in from St. Louis last night and was able to watch the brilliant lighting as I drove from the airport to my step-brother's home. It was absolutely spectacular! Just like on the weather channel. In St. Louis we'd sit on our front porch and watch them blow in from the south west. So cool!"
Dislikes: "bananas and EPIC."
Hobbies: "I have been a runner if sorts, competitive and non-competitive for most of my life. I am currently on the DL with a hip injury after a fall on a trail run. If I were a more compliant patient and did my PT everyday I might be better... But alas the physician makes the worst patient."
Welcome Susan! We are excited to have you in our OME family!
Medical education and clinical data exist in multiple unconnected databases, resulting in three problems: 1) it is difficult to connect learner outcomes with patient outcomes; 2) learners cannot be easily tracked over time through the education-training-practice continuum; 3) no standard methodology ensures quality and privacy of the data. To begin to address these issues we have developed a Medical Education Outcomes Center (MEOC) to integrate education data and to build a framework to standardize the intake and processing of requests for using these data.
Significant progress has been made including developing an inventory of over 100 data sources owned or utilized by the medical school with nearly two dozen of these data sources vetted and integrated into MEOC. Over 160 data requests have been fulfilled culminating in a range of outcomes analyses, including support of accreditation efforts. We have also developed a mechanism to link educational data to clinical practice data to begin to assess the effectiveness of our medical education programs by the clinical outcomes of our graduates. Thanks to all involved in this work (and there has been many).
This video provides a short introduction to MEOC.
Emily Melcher and Barb Smith, part of the MEOC team went to the AAMC GIR/IT conference in June where they were presented with an Honarable Mention for the inaugural Excellence Award. Many projects were submitted, and although the project that was submitted by the U was not selected, the AAMC was so impressed that they created an Honorable Mention award. The AAMC sent a letter to the Dean to recognize the award.
In early June, OME staff along with staff in the Dean's office and Office of Faculty Affairs, participated in the 3rd annual emergency evacuation drill. We had over 90% participation in this year's drill.
The Emergency Preparedness Team, consisting of many staff from each area, meets each year to plan and execute the drill. Floor monitors are stationed strategically on 6th and 2nd floor to guide staff, students, and leaders to the appropriate exits and to the designated meeting areas in case of emergency. Emergency coordinators are ready at the designated meeting areas to account for staff by checking them off a current staff list. In a true emergency, emergency personnel (police, fire, etc) will go to the designated meeting areas and work with the coordinators to identify staff that are still in the building and that may need assistance in safely exiting the building.
We appreciate the time and efforts of the Emergency Preparedness Team and their dedication to keeping our OME community safe.
OME staff is invited to join Pipeline Program Scholars in a Kick Off to the 2019-20 academic year on Friday, August 23rd (before the White Coat Ceremony) to meet the new BA/MD cohort. RSVP by August 9 if you are interested in connecting and engaging with our premedical scholars.
Clerkship and Site Director Retreat
In our biannual Clerkship and Site Director retreat, clinical education leaders came together from across the state to learn about and hone their skills in effective, evidence-based teaching strategies.
In one part of the retreat, small groups rotated through stations where they learned about and discussed teaching strategies that included "assessment for learning, instead of assessment of learning", "refining your teaching scripts and schema", and "tailoring teaching to each learner". Special thanks to our topic-expert facilitators that guided groups through these discussions (Drs Andrew Olson, Anne Pereira, Melissa Plesac, Susan Lou, and James Wallace). Extra special thanks to Tom Reimann and Mayank Verma, two current students who came to share their experience and thoughts with our educators.
Participants came from all over the state and represented a diverse array of clinical sites, specialties, and professions. This well-attended event is yet another example of the impressive commitment our educators have to our students and their learning. I could not be more appreciative and delighted to have each and every one of them on the team, and I look forward to seeing what this group does next! [submitted by Jess Blum]

get a group together to do some knitting/crocheting/other needlework
go bowling at the Gopher Gameroom
go to the Bell Museum
and so many more!
