Two of the major events in 2020 are the LCME Site Visit to be held April 19-22 and the opening of the Health Sciences Education Center on July 1. As you know we underwent a Mock Site visit January 26 to 29 run by outside consultants to help us prepare for the actual site visit in April. A huge thank-you to Bob Englander, Joe Oppedisano, Ali Niesen and Tami Brown for preparing us for the visit and for completing and submitting all required documents to LCME including the Data Collection Instrument and its Executive Summary, and the Independent Student Analysis and report. Thank-you to all who were part of the visit and to those who worked diligently behind the scenes in preparing for both the visit and the LCME documents. This was an enormous amount of work and worry. The experience we gained from this process is extremely valuable in our journey towards the goal of an 8-year accreditation cycle and in our quest to continuously improve our education programs. There is still much work to be done as we prepare for the April site visit, so thank-you in advance.
The exterior construction of the Health Sciences Education Center is done and work is ongoing in completing interior construction and moving in furniture and AV equipment. A number of operational groups continue their work. I refer you to the HSEC web page to learn more about the building and to view FAQs (https://www.health.umn.edu/education-training/health-sciences-education-center-hsec). The Grand Opening will be the week of September 14 and we will provide more details about this week as they become available.
Also of huge importance to the Medical School and its reputation are the recently released Blue Ridge Institute 2019 NIH rankings. The school has improved from #33 in 2017, #30 in 2018, to #27 in 2019. This is a huge accomplishment and one that has considerable “halo” effects on medical education.
This is an exciting time for the Medical School and 2020 will be a momentous year for us.
Thank-you again for your contributions to this effort.

It was recently announced that our amazing leader, colleague, and friend, Anne Pereira, will be stepping down as Assistant Dean for Curriculum to pursue her dream of training in palliative care medicine. She will be entering a palliative medicine fellowship next year here at the University - so she will not be too far away! Plans will be made this spring to celebrate her contributions to the Office of Medical Education and to wish her well in her journey.
Amanda Termuhlen, our Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs, is the Chair the Search Committee for the new assistant dean.
Security Access Coordinator Change: Over the past few years, Mary Winger was the security access coordinator or Department Facilities Representative (DFR) for OME and was responsible for all office keys/code locks, and signage. Starting last month, Christine Kiel is the new access coordinator/key authorizer. Please contact her when keys need to be replaced or are needed for new staff.
Also - we have not yet received a confirmed date for changing all of the office/conference room locks (reported a few months ago). They are doing this in stages, as many AHC areas were affected by the theft of the master keys that happened several months ago.

Curriculum Director Retreat
On November 4th and 5th, faculty and staff from the Duluth and Twin Cities campus came together for a bi-campus retreat. The three objectives for the retreat were: to build community, to develop common course objectives shared across both campuses, and to build consensus on process to develop common assessment items for shared learning objectives. Monday evening was spent sharing a meal, getting to know one another and talking about culture within and across campuses. On Tuesday morning the faculty worked through draft common course objectives and each attendee provided feedback on the draft objectives or wrote their own. The afternoon focused on the process that will be used to identify learning objectives for each course objective and how a Table of Specifications can be used to prioritize course content. It was a great opportunity to get to know one another better and accomplish curriculum and assessment goals.
Anne Pereira, Assistant Dean of Curriculum, was chosen by Impact Medicine as one who exemplifies the mission of the Medical School. She is highlighted in a video on the Impact Medicine website. You can also see her picture in the hallway by GME. Congratulations Anne!
New "Houses" in Student Affairs
We are excited to have our full contingent of Academic Advisors all here and supporting our students. For the last couple years we have had a single advisor, Addy Irvine. This past winter she was joined by Luke Feuling Porter, and this fall we welcomed Abbe Holmgren to the team. Now each of our students, years 1-4, are assigned one of these three advisors based on their House. Addy supports students in the Beacon House, Abbe for Zestar!, and Luke Centennial House. These advisors are a huge resource to our students, helping them navigate their academic progression, manage the logistics of our school, and connecting them to resources. If you want to learn more about their role and how they are supporting out students, please stop in and say hi! Addy and Abbe can be found in B612 Mayo and Luke is in B615.
Academic Advisors Present at MCPA
Academic Advisors Addy Irvine, Luke Feuling Porter, Abbe Holmgren, and MS2 Maggie Plattes, presented at the annual Minnesota College Professionals Association (MCPA) conference held at the Radisson Blu in Bloomington on October 31st. Their presentation was titled "Welcome to the House: Incorporating Intrusive Academic Advising Into a Medical School Learning Community". The presentation focused on both the new Houses model in the medical school as well as the intrusive/proactive advising approach being used by Academic Advisors in their work. Attendees were encouraged to consider which approaches could be applied in their own work to better serve students.

There will be a more formal (donut) welcome for them in the coming weeks!

In his free time he cooks vegan meals, helps coach his kids' hockey teams, studies labor history, and works as a regional scout for a Western Hockey League team. He likes strong coffee made with cayenne and cinnamon.
Concluding comments from Associate Dean, Dimple Patel:
"The Office of Admissions including Pipeline Programs is where our learners begin their relationship with the Medical School and specifically the Office of Medical Education. [The Admissions program contributes to the mission of the Medical School by working] everyday across the continuum of medical education to accomplish our goals of recruiting a broadly diverse medical student body. The Office of Admissions works with over 100 volunteers across the Medical School and broader community. Without the support of all of these people we would not be able to accomplish our goals.
We would like to thank our colleagues across the continuum, especially UME, for allowing us to be involved in learning more about our learners once they are here. This knowledge is critically important to our work and the betterment of our processes."

On October 31st, staff in all areas of OME, Dean's office staff, Office of Faculty of Affairs staff, and many others that have collaborated with OME, gathered for the third annual Harvest Potluck and Staff Appreciation event. There was an amazing turnout and feedback indicates that people really enjoyed taking a breather in the middle of the day to enjoy the company of fellow co-workers and to get acquainted with staff in other areas. We learned a lot about each other when playing Ice Breaker Bingo! Food was plentiful and delicious! Thank you to everyone who helped organize this fun event - and to those who contributed by bringing food/treats and sharing with us your culinary (or shopping) talents!
"Kudos to Brinsley and Patty on the RPAP/MetroPAP team for all their work to prepare for RPAP/MetroPAP orientation and to support the students as they transitioned out to their sites across the state! All the work it takes to prep and run things smoothly can become invisible when a job is well-done, which makes that work all the more extraordinary. Thank you for everything you did for the faculty, staff, and especially the students to make orientation a success!" [Liz Sopdie]
"Addy Irvine has done an exceptional job on moving the new academic advising program forward. She has been a great colleague to go to for advice, training, and historical context of medical school processes. As a newer academic advisor, she ensured I onboarded smoothly and that I am able to do my job effectively." [Luke Feuling Porter]
"As a newer staff member, Scott Slattery has been incredibly welcoming to me. He always is checking on how I am doing in my role and outside of work. He has vocally expressed his appreciation of me being part of the staff numerous times, which has truly made me feel like I belong at the Medical School. It has been a pleasure to collaborate with him on different projects." [Luke Feuling Porter]
"Cynthia Johnson has been a great coworker to share an office with. More than a handful of times, Cynthia has brought in different new recipes and baked goods to share with staff members. Furthermore, I have constantly observed her going above and beyond to plan special social events and gatherings for staff members across OME to ensure their personal life events are acknowledged and celebrated by the staff." [Luke Feuling Porter]

We're lucky to have you, Jon!" [Rachel Rudeen]
