Resource: What's right for me?

How many calories does your body need each day?

*These are the dietary recommendations for those who get 30 minutes of physical activity or less on most days. Higher levels of physical activity require more calories and a larger amount of foods from most groups.

**These are the calories if you choose low-fat, lean foods from the five major food groups and limit use of foods with added fats, sugars, and salt.

***Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, teenagers, and young adults up to age 24 may need more.

****Discretionary calories are the “extra,” or remaining, calories after accounting for calories consumed from all food groups with choices being fat-free, low-fat or with no added sugar.
