Grade 6

Welcome to Grade 6. There are four subject areas to explore: Social Studies, Health, Science and Math.

Each subject includes activities that require you to listen, watch, read and do.

NOTE: Students may need a parent or other helper to guide them through these activities and help them discuss the reflection questions.

Students will be required to be signed into the UGCloud domain and/or the UG2GO site to access some videos

The focus for these activities is web based learning. PDFs can either be printed or used with Google Read and Write online.

In this Social Studies unit, children will have the opportunity learn more about the main characteristics of North American First Nation cultures and the attitudes of early European explorers. Students will need a parent or other helper to guide them through these activities and help them discuss the reflection questions.

Students will describe the characteristics of Native peoples before European contact and they will recognize the motivations of the explorers in coming to North America. Students will also analyze the interactions between the First Nation peoples and the European explorers to identify the effects of cooperation and the reasons for disagreement between these two groups.

In this Health unit, children will have the opportunity to demonstrate an understanding of factors that contribute to healthy development to help them to take appropriate actions relating to their personal health and well-being. Students will need a parent or other helper to guide them through these activities and help them discuss the reflection questions.

Students will explain how healthy eating and active living work together to improve a person’s general health and well-being and they will describe how the benefits of both can be promoted to others (e.g., both provide more energy and contribute to improved self-concept, greater resistance to disease, and better overall health; both help a person to maintain a weight that is healthy for them).

In this Science unit, children will have the opportunity to discover that maintaining diversity is critical to the health of the planet, therefore it is important to understand the connection between all living things. Students will need a parent or other helper to guide them through these activities and help them discuss the reflection questions.

Students will demonstrate an understanding that biodiversity includes the diversity of individuals, species, and ecosystems. Students will also be asked to consider how the choices made by humans can impact biodiversity.

In this Math unit, children will have the opportunity to demonstrate an understanding of the five Math strands.

Students will explore a variety of Math activities.
