Growth and Changes in Plants:

In this Science unit, students will learn about and discuss how plants grow and change and have distinct characteristics. They will also learn about how plants are important to the planet and the need to protect plants and their habitats. Students will need a parent or other helper to guide them through these activities and help them discuss the reflection questions.

Listen/Watch/Do - Seeds and Plants

Learn 360 - Watch the video about seeds and plants. As you watch the video, sketch a plant, its various parts and what it needs to survive (e.g. insects, water etc.). Label the main parts and add details about their function.

Learn 360. Watch the video about how compost is used on a farm. How can old, leftover fruits and vegetables help to grow new, healthy plants?

Listen/Watch/Do - Indigenous Use of Medicinal Plants

Watch this video and discuss what you learned about different plants and their medicinal uses.


Write - Padlet

Padlet- Use this interactive web tool to post the things you have learned about medicinal plants. Aim to create at least five posts.

Listen/Watch/Do - The Great Kapok Tree

Listen to the story “The Great Kapok Tree.” Discuss the main ideas with your helper. How do trees help the rainforest? How can we protect trees?

Write - Protect The Rainforest

Write a letter to the Prime Minister to tell him/her why we need to help protect the Rainforest.

Bonus: Research how the Prime Minister might use his/her influence to help protect the Rainforest.
