Behavioural Medicine is an umbrella that covers three facets of residency training:
Communication Skills
Mental Health Teaching
Resilience Training and Physician Wellness
Five Behavioural Medicine workshops are scheduled into the first year block-time rotation, which focus on teaching advanced communication skills.
The five Behavioural Medicine workshops are:
Introduction to the patient-centred interview and finding common ground
Approach to difficult conversations
Pearls for difficult encounters (including ending the doctor-patient relationship, approach to college complaints) and wellness activity
Breaking bad news and harm disclosure
Review of the patient-centred interview and Approach to Patient Experiencing Emotional Dysregulation
REQUIREMENTS
Attendance at all Bmed sessions is mandatory in person and required for program completion.
Residents must be freed from any clinical duties to attend this mandatory activity, this includes being post-call.
Any unexcused absences may be kept on a resident’s permanent file and will require an explanation in writing to the program.
The Program may require completion of an additional assignment or supplemental activity in lieu of an absence from a mandatory activity.
