589 Oceans Law (Jefferies)
SPRING INTENSIVE COURSE
HOW TO APPLY
This course is open to 23 law students who are currently in their first year (1L) or second year (2L) of studies. If you are a part-time student, you are eligible to apply so long as you are not in the final year of your program.
While there is no formal pre-requisite for this course, preference will be given to students that have completed (or are presently enrolled in) Public International Law, Environmental Law, or another international law course, or that have a background in oceans-related content. Priority may be given to 2L students depending on the number of applications submitted.
Participants will be selected based on the following:
1) A written application that includes a 1-page Statement of Interest, a CV/resume and an unofficial transcript. The Statement of Interest is your opportunity to demonstrate your interest in (and suitability for) the course. Your written application will be due February 28, 2025 (emailed to cameronj@ualberta.ca);
2) An in-person interview with Professor Jefferies held in early March.
Successful applicants will be notified by mid-March.
This intensive Spring semester course will be offered partially at the University of Alberta Faculty of Law and partially at the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre on Vancouver Island. The breakdown for the class is as follows:
1) Pre-field trip readings, lectures and a pre-departure orientation. The lectures will be held at the University of Alberta and all be completed in a hybrid manner the week of May 12-16. The lectures will be delivered in person but also streamed and recorded for students who are not in Edmonton or who have to watch at a different time owing to work commitments.
2) In-person attendance at the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre: May 13-20. In addition to class-room lectures, activities at the marine station include boat trips, beach visits, and hikes (up to 5 kilometers).
Important information: students will be required to fund their travel to and from Bamfield. Funding in the amount of $1,250 will be allocated for each selected applicant, which will be administered as follows: the Faculty of Law will cover the expenses associated with room and board at the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre (approx. $823/student) and then the remainder will be distributed to the participants following the conclusion of the class to help cover the travel costs. The accommodation situation at the marine station involves dorms with up to 4 students per room in a bunk bed arrangement. This is typical of field school set ups. The marine station has a cafeteria that serves us all of our meals, which are very good and able to adjust according to dietary restrictions.
