COURSE DESCRIPTION
Climate change is the defining reality of the century. It affects every area of life and mandates the rethinking and remaking of international and domestic laws and policies. This course equips students to understand current trends in international and domestic climate laws in various sectors. Importantly, students are given the opportunity and tools to contribute to the remaking of laws and policies that are alive to the unique demands of climate change.
Students will work in groups to craft model laws, policies and standards or prepare policy briefs and research reports on hot-button issues in Alberta and Canada. The issues include Just Futures in Canada (e.g., post-fossil host communities restoration, community-led fossil energy project decommissioning); Just Renewables (e.g., reviewing and proposing policies on renewable energy in Alberta and addressing impacts on communities and the environment); and Just Participation (e.g., reviewing and proposing laws and policies on meaningful engagement and citizens’ ownership of the transition).
The course will engage lawyers and environmental advocates on practical climate change law issues and skills including effective policy drafting, public participation, and strategic communication.
