Jill says: "I'm looking at doing a book sale for middle school students, but I'm trying to garner interest before going through it in case there isn't enough interest. I'm looking to see if students might be interested in the new book by Terry Lynne Johnson, called Dog Driven. Anyone who purchases a copy will be entered into a drawing to win a gift box including a signed copy of the book Ice Dogs a wooden wolf ornament, a sticker, and a pen. Can you ask your students to see if they might be interested? Thanks!"
Targets: TS2b: Expressive and effective written communication
1. YWP: You too could be published!
When? Take a moment to interpret the meaning of the sign in this photo by (Carter Devenney, Essex High School). Does it apply to your own life, reminding you of something you’ve always intended to try? Or does it apply to the state of the world? Climate change? What does the sign make you think of?
Letter. The Senate majority leader has agreed to read one letter from one student in the U.S., and take action based on what the letter says. Your letter has been chosen. The letter has to be 250 words or less. Write the letter.
2. Worktime:
--> Finish Outsiders cover and explanation (write at least 2 sentences explaining why your cover is better)
--> Mary will check in with you if you are missing trial notes and/or trail scoring
--> Be sure all of the work you did for the trial is saved in your LA folder so I can give you credit for it
--> Complete at least one activity for scope/action for October and type up your YWP for publication!

1. Trial is today!
2. As you watch the trial, please take notes. The jury will especially want to take notes on every part of the trial. When the final statements of the trial are made, the jury will leave the room to deliberate. When they return, they will hand Mary their decision and Mary will ask the foreperson to read the verdict. As we view the trial, you can follow along with the script so you know what to say and when you need to say it.
3. At the conclusion of the trial, after the verdict is given, Mary will ask you to self-assess on the mock trial scoring document. Make a copy of it, highlight and comment and save it in you LA folder. Thank you for your participation in this project. You may hand in your Outsiders book.
4. Chris Williams says there has never been a good Outsiders book cover. Have some artistic fun as you consider the important and lasting scenes and themes that will stay with you long after you have left this book behind in our curriculum.
5. Halloween Kahoot
I think this trial seems to be about Ponyboy's guilt in the crime. It is a deleted scene from the movie.
Notice how people dress up a bit for court. Not required but fun!
Targets: LS2: Produce clear and coherent writing for a range of informative and analytical tasks, purposes, and audiences.
1. This is it! The trial starts Monday...Final day for preparation is today!

--> Are you responsible for a cross examination? complete cross examination questions
--> What are objections you can make in the trial? Lawyers only can make objections.
2. How will you be scored for the mock trial?
3. Are you interested in serving on the jury for the other class? If your work is complete and you are entirely ready for the trial on Monday, and you want to be an impartial juror-- see me. I can only have 5 jurors.

1. Film notes DUE and reactions?
2. How does a trial work? Here is a very simplified version
First: opening statement from the prosecution, the defense may give their opening statement now or later
Second: the prosecution calls their first witness and the witness is directly examined (they know the questions)
Third: the witness is then cross examined (they don't know what questions they will be asked)
Fourth: step 2-3 are repeated for all of the witnesses that the prosecution has
Fifth: the prosecution might give their closing statement now or later
Sixth: the defense might give their opening statement now if they didn't give it earlier
Seventh: the defense calls their first witness and the witness is directly examined (they know the questions)
Eighth: the witness is then cross examined (they don't know what questions they will be asked)
Ninth: the defense gives their closing statement now
Tenth: the prosecution might have waited to give their closing statement now
3. Direct examination questions should be written
4. Start preparing for your other jobs, cross examinations and opening/closing statements

On one side: short answer for these two questions
--> What is the significance of the blue mustang that Randy and Bob are driving? Look back at page 33 and/or ahead to page 44.
-- > What do you think Ponyboy means when he says "My mother was golden..." (48)? Read a little of the context again, if needed.
On the back respond to one of these bullet points below:
--> "It's not just money. Part of it is, but not all. You greasers have a different set of values. You're more emotional. We're sophisticated--cool to the point of not feeling anything. Nothing is real with us. You know, sometimes I'll catch myself talking to a girl-friend, and realize I don't mean half of what I'm saying. I don't really think abeer blast on the river bottom is super-cool, but I'll rave about one to a girl-friend just to be saying something" (38). "It ain't fair that we have all the rough breaks!' I didn't know exactly what I meant, but I was thinking about Johnny's father being a drunk and his mother a selfish slob and Two-Bit's mother being a barmaid to support him and his kid sister after their father ran out on them, and Dally--wild, cunning Dally--turning into a hoodlum because he'd die if he didn't, and Steve--his hatred for his father coming out in his soft, bitter voice and the violence of his temper. Sodapop... a dropout so he could get a job and keep me in school, and Darry, getting old before his time trying to run a family and hold on to two jobs and never having any fun--while the Socs had so much spare time and money that they jumped us and each other for kicks, had beer blasts and river-bottom parties because they didn't know what else to do. Things were rough all over, all right. All over the East Side. It just didn't seem right to me" (43)
What is Cherry saying in the first quote about how things are rough for the Socs? Also, what is Ponyboy saying in the second quote about how things are rough for the greasers? Does he agree with Cherry? Explain in at least 3 thoughtful sentences.
--> "It wasn't fair for the Socs to have everything. We were as good as they were; it wasn't our fault we were greasers. I couldn't just take it or leave it, like Two-Bit or ignore it and love life anyway, like Sodapop, or harden myself beyond caring, like Dally, or actually enjoy it, like Tim Shepard. I felt the tension growing inside of me and I knew something had to happen or I would explode" (47). "Things gotta get better, I figured. They couldn't get worse. I was wrong" (52).
What do you think is going to happen and what clues do you have from chapters 1-3 that this is what will happen? If things are going to get worse, as Ponyboy says at the end of this chapter, what could that be based on what you've read in chapters 1-3? Explain your thinking in at least 3 thoughtful sentences.

2. Writer's notebook/Reader's notebook
How do you write for 7 minutes?
--Let go of your judge, it doesn’t have to be ‘good’, it doesn’t have to follow grammar or spelling rules, it doesn’t have to look perfect on the page. Writers write a lot and a lot of what they write is fodder-- it’s just stuff in their heads that they get on the page to use bits and pieces of later for pieces they polish up. The goal of the writer’s journal is just to have a lot of writing in it… a lot! Quality doesn’t matter at all, it’s all about quantity!
--Don’t like the prompt? Skip it and write whatever you want!
--Here’s a trick-- keep your pen/pencil on the page. Keep it moving.
--You can always write stream of consciousness, literally whatever is in your head!
WEEK 1
