Canadian Association of General Surgeons

The Canadian Association of General Surgeons Residents Committee has developed a handbook for general surgery residents that includes key research funding opportunities. 

PSI Foundation Resident Research Grants

Resident Research Grants are concise health research projects, which have been largely developed by the Resident. The project must be supervised by a physician with an academic appointment. To be eligible to apply, the Resident must have PGY status as per the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. Up to $30,000 for a maximum of 2 years is available.  

The PSI Foundation no longer has deadlines. You may submit an application at any time.  

MyRoad Health Research Exchange Competition 

The competition invites applicants to propose collaborative research projects in the areas of cardiometabolic health, diabetes and obesity, with the goal of complementing their training path with experiential learning opportunities in another research group, in Canada or internationally. The amount of each grant is up to $5,000 for an internship of 3 months or less and up to $10,000 for an internship of more than 3 months.

Canadian Paediatric Society 

Hospital Paediatrics Resident Grant: The Hospital Paediatrics Section promotes interest in and the advancement of hospital paediatrics. To support these goals, this $2,000 grant is presented to a qualified pediatric resident to offset the cost of engaging in scholarly activity related to hospital pediatrics by providing start-up funding for resident-led projects in hospital pediatrics.

The deadline for submission is October 31 of each year. 

Oral Health Community Outreach and Research Grant: This grant provides up to $1,000 in funding for community outreach programs and research projects. A maximum of two projects will be funded. Research grant submissions may include basic science, clinical, epidemiological or educational research pertaining to the broad area of oral health. Priority will be given to applications that seek to improve equitable access to oral health care.

The deadline for submission is March 31 of each year. 

Paediatric Respiratory Health Section Project Grant: This grant was created to encourage scholarly, knowledge translation, advocacy or quality improvement initiatives related to pediatric respiratory medicine. The grant will provide $2,000 in funding for selected projects.

Research Grant for the Study of Communities Impacted by Health Disparities 

The Research Grant for the Study of Communities Impacted by Health Disparities supports family medicine residents (and physicians) in conducting community-based research and producing rigorous evidence related to the health disparities prevalent in either remote, rural Canadian communities or underserved outer-city areas beyond the urban inner-city core. The value of this grant is up to $4,000.

Skin Investigation Network of Canada Trainee Mobility Award 

The SkIN Canada Trainee Mobility Award provides funding for trainees in the field of skin research to study and conduct research for a brief period in a laboratory other than their own within Canada or abroad as part of their training experience. The value of the Skin Canada Trainee Mobility Award is up to $4,000 which can be used for the trainee’s research in a host laboratory within Canada or abroad for a period ranging from of 2 weeks to 6 months.

The application deadline is May 15 and October 15 of each year. 

The Dr. Karen Mann Catalyst Grant in Medical Education Research

The Dr. Karen Mann Catalyst Grant in Medical Education Research is intended for Royal College Resident Affiliates and early career clinician educators to encourage entry into medical education research through mentorship. This grant awards up to C$30,000 in funding.

BDC Summer Studentships in Inherited Bleeding Disorders Research

Bleeding Disorders Canada will support interested Canadian medical or science students to work for up to 4 months during the summer on a research project relevant to inherited bleeding disorders. Learners require an excellent academic record and Acceptance by a scientist involved in a current research project related to inherited bleeding disorders supported by BDC or another major granting agency. A stipend of $6,000 will be provided to successful applicants. 

All completed application forms and supporting documents must be submitted on or before November 27, 2026. 

Charles Hollenberg Summer Studentship Program

Fourteen summer studentships are available for undergraduate and medical students to carry out summer research in diabetes under the supervision of a member of the Banting & Best Diabetes Centre. Students will receive a minimum stipend of $7,539. 

Applications are due January 21, 2027 at 4:00 pm ET. 

Keenan Research Summer Student Program

The Keenan Research Summer Student Program provides opportunities for undergraduate and medical students to conduct research at Unity Health Toronto (St. Michael’s Hospital site) under the supervision of a Principal Investigator (scientist and/or MD). Learners are responsible for aligning themselves with a principal investigator at Unity Health Toronto. 

Post-Secondary Summer Student Research Program

The Summer Student Research Program (SSRP) places undergraduate, graduate or health professional program students with faculty within Academics at Women’s College Hospital. In conjunction with the Emily Stowe Scholar Program, the Summer Student Research Program is committed to establishing relationships that support, mentor, and advance the wholistic development of diverse persons.

Applications for the Summer 2027 program will open in December 2026.

SickKids Summer Research Program

The SickKids Summer Research Program provides professional and career development opportunities for undergraduate and medical students who are working on a research project with a Research Institute scientist for the summer. 

Positions will be posted in late fall/early winter. 

T-CAIREM Summer Research Program

The T-CAIREM Summer Research Program gives undergraduate and students in professional programs at Canadian universities who are interested in medical AI the opportunity to complete a paid summer research project with a T-CAIREM researcher. In 2027, 30 paid summer research positions will be available. Students will receive a minimum stipend of $7,200 for the 350-hour program.

The application deadline is January 24, 2027 at 11:59 pm ET. The trainee and supervisor must complete the application together.

The University Health Network Summer Training And Research Program provides opportunities for students to perform summer research under the supervision of a UHN scientist, attend educational sessions to learn critical research and professional development skills, communicate their research with the community during a Research Day, and receive a certificate of program completion.

SRI Summer Student Research Program

Sunnybrook Research Institute offers a Summer Student Research Program that provides undergraduate and medical students with a unique hospital-based research experience and showcases the postgraduate environment as a prospective career.

Canadian Geriatrics Society Student and Trainee Travel Grants

The Travel Grant Award supports students and trainees who reside more than 100 km from the location of the Annual Scientific Meeting. With 20 grants of up to $500 each, this initiative aims to alleviate travel costs and foster participation in this event.

CFMS-MDFM Travel Equity Fund

Each year the Canadian Federation of Medical Students (CFMS) and MD Financial Management allocate funds to provide financial assistance for CFMS member medical students who wish to attend their General Meetings and annual events, including the CFMS Annual General Meeting, National Day of Action, and Canadian Medical Student Conference. The reimbursement will need to be equal to or more than $100.

Reimbursement request must be received by CFMS within 14 days after the event.

Dr. W. Dale Dauphinee Award for Excellence in Medical Education

The Dr. W. Dale Dauphinee Award for Excellence in Medical Education is awarded annually by the Medical Council of Canada to one medical student and one resident who have demonstrated excellence in medical education within the schools of medicine in Canada. Each recipient will be awarded $5,000 to be used for studies, books, or e-learning tools, and/or conference attendance. 

The letters of nomination must be submitted electronically to awards@mcc.ca no later than April 30 of each year. 

Maximize your Research on Obesity and Diabetes (MyRoad)

MyRoad General Travel Award Competition 2026-2027: This program aims at supporting trainees and early career investigators in the field of obesity, diabetes and cardiometabolic diseases to present their research results in national and international scientific events to promote dissemination of their discovery and increase career success. A total of 6 awards of up to 1000$ will be funded yearly.

The next application deadline is January 15, 2027 for scientific events between April and July 2027.

Pancreas & Islet Transplant World Congress: In 2027, the Pancreas & Islet Transplant World Congress will be held in Montreal, Canada, from July 7 to 10, and MyRoad is offering up to $1500 to cover transportation, accomodation and registration fees. This event is dedicated to advancing both the established and emerging strategies in pancreas and islet transplantation and beta cell replacement. Applicants must be in the field of obesity, diabetes and cardiometabolic diseases. 

The deadline for submission is December 7, 2026. 

Canadian Paediatric Society 

Adolescent Health Travel Grant: This grant supports paediatric residents interested in pursuing a career in adolescent medicine. One applicant will be selected each year and will receive complimentary registration and up to $1,000 to attend the Canadian Paediatric Society (CPS) Annual Conference.

The deadline for submission is March 31 of each year. 

Emerging Professional in Child Maltreatment Grant: This grant was created by the CPS Child and Youth Maltreatment Section to foster the developing interest of a medical trainee in the field of child maltreatment. The grant will support travel and participation costs of one trainee annually at the annual National Symposium on Advanced Practices in Child Maltreatment, which usually occurs in November and December.

The deadline for submission is March 31 of each year. 

Paediatric Allergy Travel Grant: This grant provides an educational opportunity for young physicians in, or interested in, the field of paediatric allergy, and fosters interest and participation in the section’s activities. The $750 grant is awarded annually at the section’s business meeting to help offset expenses associated with attending the CPS Annual Conference.

Ontario Medical Student Association Conference Grants

The Ontario Medical Students Association (OMSA) is the provincial voice of Ontario's medical students since 1974. The OMSA provides conference grants of up to $250 per recipient across three funding rounds during the calendar year.

Skin Investigation Canada Trainee Travel Award

SkIN Canada provides partial funding for trainees to attend conferences as part of their training experience. The value of the SkIN Canada Travel Award is a maximum of $500 CAD. Reimbursement will be based on the eligible expense receipts submitted.

The application deadline is October 15 of each year. 

Women's Health Research Cluster Trainee Travel Awards

The Travel Award provides up to 20 awards of $250 CAD each to subsidize conference registration or travel costs for conferences about women's health or sex/gender differences. Application eligibility will be assessed by the WHRC team. The award is offered twice a year, in the Spring and Fall.

Applications are due November 6th 2026 at 5:00 pm ET.

CFMS Student Initiative Grant

CFMS Student Initiative Grants (SIG) Program was established in 2007 to provide support and funding to medical student initiatives including charitable, educational, and social events all organized by medical students. The maximum amount of funding that may be requested is $3,000.00 for Tier 1 (large scale events) and $1,500.00 for Tier 2 (small to medium scale events). 

CFMS SIG 2026-2027 applications are scheduled to open December 1st, 2026.

IHDCYH Talks 

The IHDCYH Talks competition celebrates and amplifies knowledge mobilization outputs and knowledge sharing creations that share a clear, evidence-based message and are designed to have an impact on the health of children, youth, and families. It is important that the content of the submissions be current, engaging, easily understood, and accessible.

Ontario Medical Student Association Conference Grants

The OMSA provides several funding oppotunities to medical students throughout the year. These include: 

Event/Initiative Sponsorships: Financial support of up to $500 for student-led initiatives, events, and conferences that benefit medical students or the local community.

Abeera Shahid Recognition Awards: Honours Ontario medical students who make a positive impact at their medical school, university, local, or provincial level in areas like advocacy, mentorship, and community health. The award is valued at $500 per student, plus $250 to charity. 

Art of Medicine Awards: Highlights creative works, including painting, music, dance, poetry, and other art forms, that reflect student experiences and themes in medicine. The award is valued at $250 per student.

Medical Student Education Research Grants: Supports medical students in Ontario conducting dedicated medical education research projects. The grant is valued at $5000. 

QI and Accessibility Grant: Empowers medical students to lead projects that address barriers to medical education and promote inclusivity for diverse populations.
