Crazy 8’s is a fast sketching exercise that challenges people to sketch eight distinct ideas in eight minutes. The goal is to push beyond your first idea and to generate a wide variety of solutions to your challenge. It might be intimidating for some people as is involves some sketching, so it’s helpful to reassure everyone that these are very rough sketches! The ideas generated here do not have to be great, it’s about letting loose with crazy ideas that might open the door to something useful.

Step-by step guide
Start with 8 empty boxes
Give each person a piece of paper and get them to fold it into 8, or use the template available.
Set a time for 8 minutes and sketch!
Set the timer for 8 minutes and ask the participants to quickly sketch 8 ideas in the allotted time.
Take it in turns to present your ideas back
When the timer pings, stop sketching and take it in turns to present your top three ideas to the group.
Iterate your ideas
After listening to everyone present, tell everyone that they have 6 minutes to develop three ideas. These could their original ideas of they can steal ideas from someone else in the group.
Vote
Ask everyone to put their 3 ideas on the wall (real of virtual) and they give everyone 2 sticky dots and ask them to vote for their favourite ideas from the group.
Use the outputs as spring board to drill down on the best ideas
The chosen ideas can be worked up as prototypes, to-be customer journeys and value propositions.
