Gross Motor

What Are Gross Motor Skills?

These are skills that develop throughout childhood that rely on large muscle groups and core stabilizers to perform whole body movements.  These skills include developing head control, rolling, sitting upright, developing limb control, transitioning between different positions, crawling, standing, walking, running, jumping, dancing, etc.  The development of gross motor skills is complex relying on integration and development of multiple body systems (e.g. vision, breathing, body awareness, balance, coordination, etc.).  Gross motor skills are important to help a child gain strength, independence, confidence, body awareness, promote socialization, engage in play, as well as develop and maintain physical, mental, and emotional health and wellness.  Resources listed below offer information and tips on health, fitness, and/or exercise programs.  These suggestions are not individualized and thus may not be appropriate for your needs.  Please consult with your doctor or a health professional before starting this program and use of any information from these handouts are solely at your own risk.
