Student Bursaries and School Awards
AFLoffers over $50,000 in bursaries and awards to support literacy and post-secondary aspirations of students.

• Proudly Pinoy Bursary: This award is part of an ongoing strategy
to address this need by increasing educator representation from the
TCDSB Filipino student community, who currently comprise over
30% of total enrolment. (2 awards of $5,000 each)
• belairdirect Bursary for Newcomers: This bursary will be awarded
to a TCDSB student who is a recent immigrant to Canada (landed
immigrant/permanent resident) working to achieve his/her
educational dreams through post-secondary education. (1 award of
$5,000)
• AFL Bursary for Exceptional Students: This bursary will be presented to a graduating student who is
identified as exceptional and there is evidence of financial need and/or personal challenges. (1 award of
$1,000)
• AFL Student Creative Spirit Bursary for Indigenous Youth AND the AFL Student Guiding Spirit
Bursary for Indigenous Youth: As part of the ongoing journey towards Truth and Reconciliation
and ensuring Every Child Matters, these two bursaries co-sponsored with the Indigenous Education
Department, help defray the cost of post-secondary education for First Nations, Inuit or Métis students. (2
Creative Spirit Bursaries each of $2,500 and 2 Guiding Spirit Bursaries of $2,500 each are available)
• AFL Skilled Trades Bursary: This bursary is awarded each year to a TCDSB secondary student, to defray
costs associated with pursuing an apprenticeship program or continuing post-secondary education in the
skilled trades. (1 award of $1,000)
• Murdocca Family Bursary: This bursary will be awarded annually to a graduating student who requires
financial assistance in order to pursue studies in the area of English at a post-secondary institution.
(1 award of $1,500)
• AFL Bursary for Studies in Mental Health: AFL established this bursary in response to the ongoing
commitment of TCDSB students and AFL to supporting student mental health. The bursary of $1,000
is awarded to one TCDSB secondary school graduate in order to help defray the cost of post-secondary
school education in the mental health sciences (ie. social work, psychology, psychiatry).
• Tom Leon Student Bursary: The Tom Leon Student Bursary is awarded to graduating students who
require financial assistance in order to pursue post-secondary studies at an accredited institution. (4
awards of $5,000)
• AFL Music Bursary: AFL offers a bursary of $1,000 to help a student experiencing financial need with tuition fees to
a successful applicant planning to pursue studies in Music at the post-secondary level.
• AFL Visual Arts Bursary: AFL offers a bursary of $1,000 to help a student experiencing financial need with tuition
fees for studies in Visual Arts at the post-secondary level.
• Spirit of Inclusion Award for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing: Designated for an elementary TCDSB student
who is deaf or hard of hearing and in Grade 8, this award provides $500 financial support towards hearing loss
management for costs such as hearing aids, batteries and FM systems.
• AFL Literacy Award: This $1,000 award supports innovative programs in family literacy within elementary schools
across the TCDSB.
• AFL Literacy Award to Support Resources for Exceptional Students: It will be awarded to an elementary
school to enhance and expand literacy materials for exceptional children in the school. One award of $1,000 will be
given out annually.
• AFL Library Award in Honour of Kathy Harding: Supported by CUPE1328, this $1,000 award helps to develop,
improve and augment books and materials in an elementary school library within the TCDSB
BFCN will be awarding six $1000 scholarships and awards to Black students pursuing post-secondary education in accredited Canadian institutions. Each year, every high school in Canada may nominate one university-bound graduating student for the Schulich Leader Scholarship.
A Schulich Leader Nominee represents the top entrepreneurial-minded student pursuing a STEM university program and in turn, becomes eligible to win a $100,000 or $120, 000 scholarship.
This dynamic student demonstrates: Academic excellence, Leadership, charisma and creativity, Plans to pursue a career in one or more of the following focus areas: technology, engineering, entrepreneurship and business enterprise, applied scientific research.
*Strong consideration will be given to students with financial need.
A Schulich Leader Nominee is NOT: focused on activism (environmental/political/societal), intended to become a practicing physician or medical researcher (e.g. Doctor, Dentist, Nurse, Psychologist, Optometrist, etc.), intending to become a Professor and conduct theoretical research.

Schulich Builders: Scholarships for Skilled Trades are scholarships for students enrolling in an eligible, full-time skilled trades program at a participating college in Ontario. Ten colleges will award a total of 100 scholarships annually. Each college will award:
Five $20,000 scholarships for one-year certificate programs, and
Five $40,000 scholarships for two-year diploma programs.
These scholarships will support the costs of tuition, tools and living expenses.
Every high school in Ontario may put forth up to five student nominations. DEADLINE MAY 31st
Mon Sheong Golden Jubilee Scholarship. The award recognizes graduating secondary students who demonstrate academic excellence, community engagement and a desire to make real change. Two new award recipients, each of whom will receive $1,000 per year for the duration of their post-secondary studies, up to a maximum of four years.
The award is open to all students who are:
Graduating from an Ontario high school or CEGEP with a minimum average of 80% among their top 6 Grade 12 or CEGEP marks;
Enrolled full-time in a degree or diploma program at a recognized and publicly funded Canadian university or college beginning Fall 2025; and
Passionate about making a difference in their community or the world.

The Wolf Scholars Program (www.wolfscholars.com), a new, transformative undergraduate scholarship at the University of Toronto. Honours and awards: volunteering
Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA): Colin Hood Award - This award is given out annually to one graduating male, one graduating female, and one coach in every school in the province who, throughout their high school career, have been committed to the success of school sport at their school and within their Association. Deadline is typically end of May.
PGA (Professional Golfers’ Association of Canada) Ian Webb Scholarships: Open to any Sons/Daughters, Grandchildren, etc., of PGA of Canada Members. Five scholarships.
Athletics Canada: Andre de Grasse Future Champions Scholarship. Open to high school student-athletes – who are not yet a member of a registered track and field club – to support their pursuit of academic, athletic and personal success. The emphasis is on supporting youth from marginalized or remote communities, and on Speed/Power events. Twenty-one student-athletes were selected in 2023. Deadline typically end of July.
