Toronto Metropolitan University
St. Joseph's Hospital is running the LIFT Summer Mentorship Program at St. Joseph’s again this year. This is for BIPOC students who have completed Grade 9 or 10 by this summer and are considering a healthcare career. The dates are July 14-18th OR August 11-15th. Students will spend half the day in the hospital units shadowing doctor mentors and then the afternoons participating in group learning experiences (e.g., career networking sessions, Indigenous perspectives on the healthcare system, Hospital Design 101, hands-on medical simulation sessions, etc.). This is a paid opportunity. There is a $600 stipend for a week’s attendance, and St. Joe's will cover all the other expenses (travel and food costs). Students can only attend for one of these two weeks, but we encourage them to indicate if they are available for both dates on the application form.
They are giving priority to students from the following BIPOC groups (who are under-represented among our staff): Black, Indigenous, Latin-X, Tibetan or South East Asian (Cambodian, Indonesian, Filipino, Laotian, Malaysian, Thai, Vietnamese etc.) Although students living in any GTA postal code may apply, we are giving priority to the following local students: M8V, M6S, M6R, M6K, M6J, M6H, M6P, M8X, M6N, or Indigenous students with a city of Toronto postal code. strongly encourage students to apply early (long before the April 30 deadline) and to put thought into their long-form answers or videos. IMMspire (or formerly known as 'Immunology on Campus') - is a program held by the Department of Immunology at University of Toronto, St. George Campus. The University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) STEM Scholars Program - This unique program seeks to identify high-achieving Black students and mentor them throughout the pathway from high school to graduate school. Please note the application form is intended for students planning to begin their undergraduate studies at University of Toronto Mississauga in September 2024 and have submitted their application to UTM through OUAC. Selected applicants will participate in Summer Bridge in July-August 2024, prior to the start of the academic year. Deadline to apply is March 19. Queen's University - Indigenous Admission Pathway - Indigenous candidates have access to an additional and alternative pathway for admission to the first year of a full-time, first-entry undergraduate degree program. Indigenous students who are interested in being considered for the IAP, must submit documents to be verified as an Indigenous student. Once a student is verified for the IAP, they will automatically: Be considered for an Indigenous Entrance Award, valued at $1,000.

STEAM Design
STEAM-D is an experiential learning program for grades 10-12 students with an interest in health sciences. In this program, learners get to connect with a diverse group of university students, researchers and healthcare professionals through a series of interactive workshops to gain exposure to a variety of academic and career pathways available within the health sciences field. The learners also work collaboratively on a research project using design thinking to generate innovative solutions to existing healthcare systems issues. The students earn a grade 12 science credit (i.e., SNC4M) that can be used towards their college and university applications.
The program is designed with an equity focus for groups that are underrepresented in health sciences (i.e., Black, Indigenous, Filipino, Latin American, racialized, and/or from any background experiencing socio-economic barriers). Priority is given to students from underserved schools and neighborhoods.
Applications will remain open until March 31, 2024. Those selected for interviews will be contacted via email between mid-March and mid-April. Interviews will be taking place in April. Please see attached brochure and link below to apply.

Our office is committed to creating pathways for prospective high school students who face systemic barriers. We facilitate interactions with various departments across all three U of T campuses: Mississauga, Scarborough and St. George campus, support the development of professional skills, and encourage the exploration of healthcare-related interests by connecting students with a diverse range of health science faculty and professionals. Please see below information about our fall and summer programs.
Fall Programming
MedLinx is a comprehensive program that runs from November to April and offers students a unique chance to gain real-world experience in healthcare through hands-on activities, mentorship, and academic workshops. The program is specifically designed to bridge the gap for students facing systemic barriers, including those from Black, Indigenous, Filipino, Latin American, racialized groups, or students who experience socio-economic challenges. This program provides activities for individual students as well as activities with specific schools such as yours.
Each participant will also receive a co-curricular transcript which will list their involvement in MedLinx activities, demonstrate their well-rounded experiences and enhance their job and university applications.
Summer Programming
The Summer Mentorship Program (SMP) provides a distinctive opportunity for high school students who are Indigenous or identify as Black African, Black Caribbean, Black North American, or from multi-racial backgrounds connected to their Black heritage. During a four-week period in July at the University of Toronto's Temerty Faculty of Medicine, participants engage in hands-on activities, experiments, lectures, and specialized projects led by professionals. They explore a variety of fields such as Nursing, Public Health, Social Work, Dentistry, Kinesiology, Physiotherapy, Medicine and much more. Additionally, they also have the opportunity to shadow professionals during clinical placements, gaining valuable mentorship experience.
We also offer a program called STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) Design, which is an experiential learning initiative with and equity focus. The learners participate in interactive sessions led by researchers, graduate students, and practitioners to broaden their understandings of academic and career pathways available within health sciences. This program is for students facing systemic barriers, including those from Black, Indigenous, Filipino, Latin American, racialized groups, or students who experience socio-economic challenges.
Students must be 16 as of June 30th and returning to high school in the upcoming fall school year to be eligible to attend. Students who complete the summer programs will also earn the grade 12 science credit (SNC 4M) and a $1600 stipend.

FuturEng Conference - FutureENG is a one day in-person conference on Saturday, January 13, hosted by Engineering Outreach in association with Hydro One. It is tailored towards young women in grades 11 & 12 for the purpose of inspiring them to become future engineers.
Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest - Samsung’s Solve for Tomorrow contest is a global initiative inspiring high school students to apply STEM-based learning toward real-world challenges that impact their communities. A submission must be sponsored and submitted by a teacher at the school.
StAR program - Provides Black, Filipino, and Indigenous (includes First Nations [status or non-status], Inuk, and Métis peoples) high school students with a paid first-hand perspective of the research currently underway at SickKids. The goal of this program is to provide students with a unique work experience over six weeks in the summer (July to mid-August). Application Deadline is January 29.
Technovation Girls Toronto - Technovation is the world's largest global tech entrepreneurship competition for girls. The program will be hybrid in 2023. Registration deadline is December 16.
Level Up Fair Evening Session Oshawa & Level Up Fair Evening Session Mississauga for students (& their parents/guardians) interested in pursuing the Skilled Trades after High School.
Science School - Students from across the province can apply for a full semester of Grade 12 science and math. The application forms for the 2024-25 school year will be posted in January on the Science Centre website with applications due in early January.
imy Inspires Tomorrow - “History education meets leadership education.”Open to youth ages 13-17 to develop and utilize their leadership skills. Students can submit an idea for a project that benefits their community to be eligible for history and project-based leadership training and a $2,500 project grant. Deadline is December 11.
Shad Canada – Entrance Scholarships - Multiple scholarships are available for Grade 10 & 11 Black and Indigenous students who are looking to attend a STEAM program. Apply before December 1.
