Innovations in Relational Practice in Education
In this session we will hear about three different innovative and inspiring elaborations of relational practice as they have been instituted at different levels in our educational systems. Our presenters, Richard DeLa Cuadra, Ingebjorg Maeland, Cathy Royal and Jen Silbert will bring social constructionist and relational ideas to life as they offer us a look into their daily work in their educational contexts.
Richard is head of school for an innovative alternative high school in Houston, Texas. They have created a ‘relational school’ where all teachers and students are trained in collaborative and dialogic practices for classrooms, learning and management.
Ingebjørg is head of school for an innovative high school and leader of a country-wide initiative throughout Norway that is developing a whole series of schools across the country which are designed with Appreciative Inquiry embedded into everything they do, from curriculum development, to classroom management, to leadership, and student relationships.
Cathy and Jen are part of the consulting team that co-designed a virtual Appreciative Inquiry Summit with 900 people participating at Portland State University on the topic of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice for the campus. Out of this summit over 25 projects were created by students, faculty, administrators and community members. You can learn more at www.pdx.edu/diversity/equity-summit
