Why 1Password
Taft will be offering 1Password, a password management software, as part of its ongoing cyber security initiatives. The software stores and manages online credentials, generate passwords, and offers additional features such as auto-filling MFA codes, private accounts for family members, and professional development sessions for Taft employees. Using a password manager, such as 1Password, eliminates the need to memorize multiple passwords and provides added security by generating unique, highly secure passwords and alerting you to potential phishing sites. Enrollment in this service is optional.
What is a password manager?
A password manager is a software application that stores and manages online credentials. It also generates secure passwords.
What are the benefits of using a password manager?
You don't have to memorize all your passwords anymore. You only need to remember the master password that unlocks your password vault.
Password managers can auto-generate highly secure passwords for you. These random passwords are long, alphanumeric, and essentially impossible to guess.
Password managers can alert you to a phishing site. If you're using a browser-based password manager, it will not auto-complete the username and password fields since it doesn't recognize the website as the one tied to the password.
Password managers help protect your identity. In a roundabout way, password managers help guard against identity theft, and here's why. Using a unique password for every site, you're segmenting your data across each website and application. If a criminal hacks one of your accounts, they won't necessarily be able to get into any of the others. It's not foolproof, but it's an additional layer of security that you'll undoubtedly appreciate after a data breach.
